Late filmmaker Raj Kapoor's 1951 classic, 'Awara', is set for a theatrical reboot following an agreement signed between India and China yesterday.
The film was upheld as the most popular Indian release in China with Mukesh's hit track, Awara Hoon, being hummed by everyone in the country. Signed between the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF), the memorandum of understanding calls for cultural performances to be organized in India and China in 2017 and 2018.
Indian Consul General in Shanghai, Prakash Gupta, said, "Both sides also attempt to make a joint theatrical re-production of Awara, which would be set in contemporary times and re-enacted as a theatre version for viewing by contemporary audiences worldwide including India and China.
The project will be jointly financed by the ICCR and the CSIAF.
