A still from the film

Chhaya Kadam talks about convincing Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine As Light

Once in a while, an actor comes across a role that resonates so strongly with them that they almost become possessive about it. For Chhaya Kadam, director Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light gave her that role. The actor was so enamoured by the character of Parvaty that she pitched hard for it. “At one point, I thought the role shouldn’t go to any other actor. So, I started listing out similarities between the character and me. I told Payal, ‘I am also from Ratnagiri. My father was a mill worker. We used to live in a MHADA building and now we live in a tower. Everything is the same between us.’ I even sang and showed her how people from Ratnagiri dance,” she laughs. Chhaya Kadam In the Cannes Grand Prix-winning film, Kadam plays a hospital staff member, who strikes an unlikely friendship with two nurses. She had complete faith in the story and in Kapadia’s vision. That it was the director’s maiden feature did not deter her. She reasons, “For me, the most important part is my character, then the story. I started my career with Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry [2013], which was his debut. I feel first-time directors work very hard on their film.” Payal Kapadia This may just be Kadam’s year. She began 2024 with Laapataa Ladies that saw her as the wise Manju mai, followed it up with Madgaon Express, and then had the Cannes win for All We Imagine as Light. The one thing common in all her outings is her characters’ feminist streak. She reflects, “I always liked characters that felt like one of us. I enjoyed films that saw the hero defeating the goons with one punch, but they never felt real. I was drawn to Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi’s brand of cinema. Now, it has become a habit to do work that I enjoy, and if we can give a social message, then nothing like it.”

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor starrer 'Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues' on hold

In March, Amazon Prime Video had announced the mythological action film, Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues, with much fanfare at its event. The Shahid Kapoor-starrer, to be helmed by Kannada filmmaker Sachin B Ravi, was designed to be one of the streaming giant’s most ambitious productions from India. However, eight months on, we’ve heard that the project has been put on hold due to budget constraints and logistical challenges.  Sources close to Ashwatthama, which was being produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment along with Amazon Studios, reveal that its budget was initially pegged at over Rs 500 crore. Apparently, the budget began to balloon as pre-production progressed. An insider from the production team shared, “The project’s scale was enormous. The idea was to create something that could rival international fantasy-action films. Ashwatthama was supposed to be shot across multiple countries. But as we began working out the logistics and coordinating shoots across international locations, it became clear that staying within budget would be a serious challenge. Pooja Entertainment’s debt became another big factor.” Kapoor had begun his physical training for the film, which would be set in the present day, with the narrative blending in mythological themes inspired by the legendary warrior, Ashwatthama, from the Mahabharata. The actor is now said to be focusing on Vishal Bhardwaj’s film instead. A trade insider said, “Given the current state of the market, studios are being cautious about green-lighting mega-budget films. A project like Ashwatthama comes with a lot of risk.” mid-day reached out to Bhagnani, who didn’t respond till press time.

Patralekhaa recalls how being known just as Rajkummar Rao’s GF affected her

Actors Patralekhaa and Rajkummar Rao, who tied the knot on November 15, 2021, celebrate their wedding anniversary today. Patralekhaa spoke to mid-day during the release of her web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ about how she felt about being addressed just as Rajkummar’s girlfriend over the years despite being a seasoned actor herself. She also sheds light on her upcoming film ‘Phule’ with Pratik Gandhi, in which she plays the role of Savitribai Phule. Patralekhaa reacts to being known only as Rajkummar Rao’s girlfriend  Patralekhaa asserts that being known as Rajkummar Rao’s significant other was the truth she made peace with. However, the bummer was that she was going through a difficult time as an artist that was beyond her relationship.  She states, “It was a difficult time just maneuvering through things, not getting the right work. You are thriving in your personal life also because work plays a very important part. You earn that salary and you come back so that you can live a better life. Nothing of that scale was working for me. I think I could live through it because of my family. I was just determined that I had to navigate this. And also I don't like regrets.” Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa married in an intimate ceremony in Chandigarh. They worked together for the first time in Patralekhaa's debut Bollywood film 'Citylights' in 2014.  Patralekhaa on her upcoming film ‘Phule’  Patralekhaa will be seen in the film ‘Phule’ with Pratik Gandhi. She plays the role of Savitribai Phule. Sharing an update on the same, she says, We have finished filming. They are in the post [production stage]. I've seen some of it and it looks really nice. I'm super excited for it.” She adds, “What phenomenal human beings, Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. You and I are sitting here because of them today. Because they propagated education for the girl child. Jyotiba Phule was a true blue feminist. It's a lot that they have done and the film has tried to cover it, but let's see. I thought her blessings were with me while we were shooting for this.” 'Phule' is written and directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan.
