For the longest time, Sukhwinder Singh has maintained that he only likes to do original music. In fact, he doesn’t sing tracks by other artistes at concerts. But, now, for the first time, the singer has done covers for some of Kishore Kumar’s tracks. Called I Love You Kishoreda, the series, Singh says, is his way of paying tribute to the music legend.

“I am an ardent fan of Kishore da. He has always been an inspiration. I don’t intend to make money with this project,” says Sukhwinder, adding that he thought of the concept on Kumar’s birthday, August 4.

Explaining how he approached the late singer’s tracks, given that they have distinct singing styles, Sukhi says, “I cannot even try to copy Kishore da. So, I adopted a fresh approach. The songs have a little bit of my style. Having said that, I have ensured that the essence of the tracks remains intact.”

Why did he think of doing covers for Kishore Kumar’s songs? He quips, “Who doesn’t admire his work? I have grown up listening to his tracks. I have sung Meri Soni Meri Tamanna, Roop Tera Mastana and Yeh Shaam Mastani from his repertoire.”

Sukhwinder says since he doesn’t intend to monetise the project, he won’t compile the songs into an album. “It will only be available online. We are targeting most digital music platforms.”

If he does covers of another artiste again, it would be Mohammed Rafi, he confesses.

Besides music, Sukhwinder is also interested in acting. The singer says he wants to hone his skills by featuring in music videos before doing films. “I’d love to do more music videos and appear in film songs. As far as Bollywood is concerned, I am quite interested. I would want to make my debut in a full-fledged musical drama,” he smiles.
