A still from Yudhra

Yudhra Movie Review: The Yudhra tragedy

YudhraU/A: Action, thrillerDir: Ravi UdyawarCast: Siddhant Chaturvedi, Malavika Mohanan, Raghav JuyalRating: 1/5 It takes almost an hour for some kinda villain to make an entry in this movie. About 45 minutes for the hero to find any sorta purpose—to his existence on screen; let alone life itself. He’d been plodding through sheer pointless, until then.  I can understand waiting for a movie to end. Can you imagine waiting for the goddamn interval?  Speaking, in particular, of the interval block in this pic—it’s a cracker night-light sequence of a shootout on a merchant ship. It’s ostensibly set in the Indian Ocean. More likely, shot on Gautam Adani’s Mundra port, with bullets flying around containers, apparently loaded with cocaine.  This is scintillating, big-screen action, alright. Enough that you sit up, take note. Only that by this time, the movie has so completely slipped through the cracks—you wonder if it makes any sense to return from the popcorn counter. Take you to the beginning of this lunacy then? As in the opening scene, where an Army man calls an IPS officer, his subordinate—both of whom, among others, hang out, in uniforms, at a party in the Mumbai Police Gymkhana.  The uniforms bear stars and IPS, on their shoulder epaulettes, but Maharashtra/Mumbai Police on the sleeves. This thorough lack of detailing for a cop-actioner is necessary to highlight. Merely because it foretells the randomness to follow.  Also, it tells us a thing or two about how Mumbai Police are the least likely to take needless offence about stuff on screen. Never mind, being repeatedly portrayed as villains in desi movies/series. Try getting away with anything close to that with the other forces, forget communities.  After the said Mumbai Police Gym party, a prominent officer and his wife get bumped off in a road accident. Their baby, thereafter, grows up as an orphaned child. He picks up a lizard with help of implements in his ’90s Camlin yellow-orange geometry box—only piece of warm nostalgia, in a pic that’s trying super hard to hearken back to ’80s, mainstream, prologue-plot-epilogue, hero-villain revenge dramas.  This boy is Yudhra, if you must know. He’s got severe anger management issues. One way to deal with it is to channel that anger into national service, perhaps. He’s sent off to “National Cadate Training Academy”.  Ignore the misspelling on screen. What exactly is this force that the hero calls the “military”? You won’t care, once you’re certain the film’s a farce! But why must you not care as an audience, anyway? Because this movie primarily emanates from second-guessing your tastes/preferences, after all. That, genre-wise, you seek comfort in the predictable, it appears. How do these filmmakers know this? Surveying so many mad actioners, especially from the South, that killed it at the box-office, post-pandemic.  To be fair, Yudhra wholly avoids latent misogyny that often frames such blockbusters as well. Peeking instead at the Tinder dating culture that the heroine (Malavika Mohanan) has a go at, while being friends with the hero, first.  To be fairer still, the producers, i.e. Excel Entertainment, have put all their might behind high-grade sets/locations/production design. Pumping in crores around which action gets choreographed. The film itself is shot like a dream, although it plays out more as a disjointed nightmare.  Shridhar Raghavan (War, Pathaan, Tiger 3) has scripted this actioner; delivering an altogether breathless narrative. Whether or not you connect with any of the characters, the plot carries on, non-frickin’-stop. Co-producer Farhan Akhtar has put his head to the dialogues. The director, Ravi Udyawar, debuted with the competent Mom (2017). I’m at the 9 am show, with a R99 ticket, given National Cinema Day—another post-pandemic phenomenon since 2022. Wherein theatres heavily slashed rates (R75) to bring back audiences. It’s the one time that the needle moved on multiplex footfalls, across the country. Sure, it’s not a packed hall, this time on. Too early, anyway. There isn’t an established superstar shouldering this heavy enterprise, either.  In any case, I suspect there is really no such thing as a proper action-star. Even the biggest ones—Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Salman Khan, et al—somewhat started out as romantic heroes, first. Gaining chutzpah, over time.  All eyes on the screen then, that’s loading the entry of the young hero as he chases bikers down Mumbai’s Eastern Freeway. Who’s this Yudhra, yo? What emerges once the helmet is off, with literally a lollipop for a prop, merging into a Frank Miller-esque image, is actor Siddhant Chaturvedi—Excel’s farm-fresh, homegrown talent, who fit beautifully into Gully Boy (2019).  Also, as the GenZ stand-up comedian, devoted to one-night-stands, in Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023). I wasn’t sure he was quite that dude, with the swag, to floor Deepika Padukone, in Gehraiyaan (2022).  Further convinced he’s not really the Bollywood baap-ka-badla kinda orphaned avenger—supposedly thick as a brick; skin made of impenetrable steel—with whistles/hoots across the hall, while he mindlessly bashes the hell out of bumbling baddies, one after another.  God, he’s given it his best. To his credit, this would’ve been a crappy film. Regardless of him.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3: Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri shoot romantic song in Leh

Think Bhool Bhulaiyaa and the first thing that comes to mind is the track, Ami je tomar. While Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Triptii Dimri shot the iconic song in April for the upcoming third instalment, now a romantic number is in the works. mid-day has learnt that Aaryan and Dimri are currently filming a love song in Leh.   A source tells us that director Anees Bazmee kicked off the Ladakh shoot earlier this week. Sachet-Parampara have composed the song, thus joining Pritam, Amaal Mallik and Tanishk Bagchi in creating the film’s album. “Rumours suggested that the track, Labon ko labon pe, from Bhool Bhulaiyaa [2007] had been recreated for this instalment and would be picturised on the leads. That is not true. The one being shot is an original composition. It is being choreographed by Vijay Ganguly against Leh’s scenic mountains and lakes.” Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit-Nene also star in the horror comedy Over its past two offerings, Bhool Bhulaiyaa has formed its own on-screen world, complete with abandoned palaces, wide courtyards, and of course, spirits. The source adds that the song, however, is reminiscent of Yash Chopra’s films. “Kartik sports a black vest, a leather jacket, and brown trousers. Triptii flaunts a dreamy look in chiffon sarees. The song will remind viewers of Yash Chopra numbers that would be shot in Switzerland,” adds the source. After the ongoing leg, the director will film another song before calling it a wrap.  Confirming the news, producer Bhushan Kumar says, “Leh and Ladakh offer a pristine landscape that hasn’t been explored much for songs in Indian cinema. For Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, we wanted a location that would match the grandeur of the film, and these breathtaking locations provide the perfect backdrop.”

A still from the film

Fawad Khan's Pakistani film 'The Legend of Maula Jatt' not releasing in Mumbai

In December 2022, shortly after it took Pakistan’s movie industry by storm, The Legend of Maula Jatt was scheduled to hit Indian theatres. However, its release was opposed by certain political groups and subsequently cancelled. Two years on, the Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan-led blockbuster is finally arriving in Indian screens on October 2, becoming the first Pakistani film in over 10 years to have a theatrical release in India. Distributor Nadeem Mandviwalla is confident of a strong run, even though the action drama is opening only in the Punjab circuit for now. Is he disappointed that it’s not releasing in Mumbai, the hub of Indian cinema? Not really, says Mandviwalla, hoping that Zee Studios -- which is facilitating the India release -- might have bigger plans ahead. “It was Bollywood which started [the practice of] Pakistani actors not being allowed to work in India. The other film industries, like those in Punjab and south, have no problem. If the picture becomes a success, it should be released in the south. This is our Baahubali, and I feel the south audience will appreciate its scale and vision.” Nadeem Mandviwalla The Legend of Maula Jatt – a reboot of Pakistan’s 1979 hit, Maula Jatt – tells the story of village hero, played by a gandasa-wielding Fawad, who becomes a symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice in rural Punjab. The distributor points out that anticipation around Bilal Lashari’s directorial venture is high in Punjab, as the film’s Punjabi roots are expected to resonate strongly with viewers. “There was tremendous excitement when it was to be released in December 2022, but it was [halted]. Now, even as the film is releasing after two years, I feel it will fare very well. There is a wide audience who wanted to see it, and since it’s not available on OTT, they haven’t been able to,” he says. The action drama, having earned R400 crore globally by 2023, is Pakistan’s highest-grossing film to date. But its release in India is so much more than just another avenue to increase its lifetime earnings. Mandviwalla is hopeful that the movie will reignite a cross-cultural exchange between the two neighbouring countries. “Whenever we used to tell the local authorities (he means Pak, no?) that we need our movies to go across the border, they used to highlight that Maulana Jatt’s release was stopped. At that time, it wasn’t the government who had stopped it; it was local pressure. Whatever is happening politically should not affect art. I’m hopeful that this release will start a better [exchange]. In Pakistan, some Punjabi films do release. We recently released Jatt & Juliet 3, which did tremendous business at my theatre.” Maula is a village folk hero and his tale is one of vengeance—he seeks to avenge the death of his family, which brings him into a deadly rivalry with Noori Natt, a notorious and equally formidable villain. The character's appeal lies in his complexity; he is a man of few words, driven by a desire for justice but not without his own flaws.  The 2022 remake, The Legend of Maula Jatt, reimagines this iconic tale for modern audiences. Directed by Bilal Lashari, the film retains the essence of the original but brings a more polished and grandiose cinematic vision, with Fawad Khan taking on the role of Maula Jatt and Hamza Ali Abbasi as Noori Natt. What makes the film click globally? He says, "I personally feel that it's not the story itself. It was always a big name in Pakistan. But this time what has worked is not the big name or what the film had done 30 years before. This time it's all about how Bilal has made this film. And that became the most surprising part. It is a remake of the film. But he has done it in a way which is exceptional. Nobody could have thought that he would come up with a background and the way he made the film. That has worked tremendously. The star cast - Mahira and Fawad - had a very big contribution towards the success of the film. But ultimately, the biggest thing that happened was that the advance booking of the film when we released it in Pakistan was not up to the mark the way I wanted it to be.  But the minute the picture opened up, within the first three days, the kind of report which was coming out, we knew that the second week is going to be much higher than the first week. And that is exactly what happened because the word of mouth was so gigantic. Everybody was shocked to see the film. Nobody could imagine that you can make a film of this sort. It has done about 121 crores in Pakistan. I think it has done 6.5 million dollars."
