Shekhar Kapur’s ambitious project 'Paani', which has been in the making for 11 years now, seems to have hit another roadblock. If sources are to be believed, Yash Raj Films (YRF) has dissociated itself from the project four years after it came on board. Creative differences are being attributed for the decision.

A source reveals, “Shekhar and YRF have been at loggerheads over Paani, which has led to constant delay in taking it forward. So, YRF recently decided to wash its hands of the project, leaving the director to scour for another production studio for backing.”

Kapur and the spokesperson of YRF remained unavailable for comment. Last November, the filmmaker set himself a deadline, saying that if Paani did not see the light of day in India by this year, he will make it with international producers. “I am looking for a producer, who says ‘I believe in you’. It is not just about the money. I believe in the issue and I think this film should be made. The problem is there are enough people in the west who want to make it but I want to make it out of India,” he was quoted as saying.

A source close to the filmmaker says, “Now, he is trying to get in touch with some big players in the West to make his dream project a reality.”

Earlier, Hrithik Roshan was supposed to play the lead in the film, but he opted out and Sushant Singh Rajput stepped in as his replacement. A few Hollywood names have also been roped in.
