Shades of Sandeep

For someone who always looked at acting as a hobby, Sandeep Kulkarni has made a pretty bright career out of it. Having started out as a visual artist, he has already acted in three national award winning films in a short career of three years. In fact, one of his films, Shwaas, even made it to the Oscars in 2004. Sandeep, who is now seen in Guntata Hriday He, talks to CS about his first love, art and his second love, acting:

Different strokes
I am an artist, having studied visual arts from the J J School of Arts. Art was always my first choice. Though I was an introvert by nature, I felt that I had the power to speak through my sketches. As a painter, I even participated in a group monsoon show, where I first exhibited my art work at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1986. If it wasn't for Satyadev Dubey, I would never have explored the actor in me.

Taking centre stage
So I took up theatre. For five years I did intense theatre in Hindi, Marathi and English while simultaneously working in television serials like 9 Malabar Hill, Farz, Swabhiman etc. I got my first break in Shyam Benegal's Mammo which set my Bollywood career rocketing. Theatre has played a pivotal role in grooming me. I am of the belief that any one with a theatre background can survive in any industry. It teaches you how to face the struggles of life and tide over them.

The bigger picture
Though I have very little free time now, I do make it a point to paint for the sheer joy of it. I usually do sketches while I am alone or between shoots. It's great to reconnect with the artist in me, one that is still a stranger to the world outside.
