In what can be considered an extension to the debate around objectification of women in Bollywood, specifically through item numbers and derogatory lyrics, feminists took to social media earlier this year to fix 'sexist' songs.
For example, 'Tu Haan Kar Ya Na Kar, Tu Hai Meri Kiran' from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Darr' (1993) was tweaked to T'u Haan Kar Ya Na Kar, Teri Marzi Kiran'.
Taking inspiration from that campaign, Indian comic group All India Bakchod has roped in Masaan co-stars Richa Chadha and Vicky Kaushal to feature in a satire video that takes on sexist lyrics.
Says Richa, "We are working and thriving in the Hindi film industry and that gives us a right to question a few things, especially in today's day and age. It's like arguing with your parents about their long-held feudal or racist beliefs. In this case, we attempt to question misogyny."
The video, directed by AIB's Tanmay Bhat, will be a compilation of six parodies, including of songs like Laal Dupatte Waali from Aankhen (1993) and Varun Dhawan-starrer Main Tera Hero's title track.
"Bollywood filmmakers underestimate the impact their movies have in shaping our culture. When such songs become a part of our daily lives, they legitimise a certain behavioral pattern. That needs to stop. We have grown up humming these songs. Now, when we look back, we realise what they actually implied.
So, we thought it would be nice to address this realisation," says Bhat. The video, which releases on YouTube today, has been choreographed by Shahzeb Sheikh, who had worked on AIB's party song with Irrfan.
