The makers of Swara Bhaskar-starrer Anaarkali of Aarah had anticipated trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over certain scenes and dialogues, but they hadn't expected that the deleted portions would make their way online. Among the leaked scenes is one that shows Swara being groped and abused, apart from a shot of her bare back. Yesterday, the film's makers lodged an FIR with the Malviya Nagar police station in Delhi.

Producer Sandip Kapur says, "When a film leaks online after its release, it makes a dent in business. So you can imagine what happens to a film that has not even hit theatres. We have lodged a police complaint. I will not spare anyone responsible for this, even if they are part of my crew."

A furious Swara, who plays a folk singer in the film, tells mid-day, "As an artiste, it is particularly upsetting that such scenes should surface out of context because then they seem sensationalist and gimmicky, giving a wrong impression about the film. These scenes were integral and we shot them with respect. This is a courageous and important film that tells a story that must be seen and heard by everyone. These scenes shouldn't be taken out of context to demean either the film or the people involved in it."

While Twitterati was quick to suspect the leak happened from the CBFC's end, Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani maintains, "Before being the CBFC chairperson, I am an industry man. The Board has never had anything to do with the leaks. I don't blame the producers, but the CBFC has become a soft target."
