The irony was hard to miss. In his next film, 'Manjhi: The Mountain Man', Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays Dashrath Manjhi, a labourer who spent 22 years carving a road out of a mountain after it came in the way of timely medical assistance for his injured wife.

The reel story tragically took a real turn on Monday when the actor’s 76-year-old father, Nawabuddin Siddiqui, suffered a brain haemorrhage and died on the way to the hospital — a two-hour drive from his native place, Burhana, in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Nawaz was in the midst of a media interaction for Manjhi: The Mountain Man when he received a call about his father’s deteriorating health. In a few minutes, he got news of his demise.

Says a source, “His father was taken to a multi-specialty hospital at Saharanpur, which is a two hour drive from Burhana. He died on the way. The last rites were performed yesterday.”

His father had been suffering from paralysis for the past few years. Nawaz during his media interactions spoke of his humble beginnings as a farmer’s son and how he surprised his parents by becoming a Bollywood actor. Nawaz has eight siblings, one of whom (Shamas Siddiqui) is also part of the television industry.
