With buzz about Aishwarya Rai being approached for a film opposite Nawazuddin, here's looking at some recent unpredictable pairings
Some of our most iconic romantic jodis have found their eternal status because of the intense on screen chemistry shared between the hero and the heroine. We can’t help but remember some of the Bollywood jodis from recent past that seemed too unlikely to strike a chord in anyone’s heart. After all, not every unusual pairing like Dhanush-Sonam Kapoor translates into a fun camaraderie between a film’s lead actors.

Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai
Movie: Policegiri (2013)
Verdict: Sanjay and Prachi looked anything but an onscreen couple. She came across as youthful and bubbly whereas he appeared almost uncle-like with his tired eyes and unhealthy paunch. On top of that, they were dancing to songs that couldn’t have been more badly choreographed in this cop caper directed by KS Ravikumar. PS: On the contrary, the years separating Naseeruddin Shah from Vidya Balan (The Dirty Picture, Ishqiya) couldn’t get in the way of their fabulous performances.
Ajay Devan and Tamannaah
Movie: Himmatwala (2013)
Verdict: First thing first. The trend of actors working with way too younger actresses reeks of sexism. Also, it’s awkward to witness the failure of such pairings. Ajay and this South actress’ magic indeed flopped. Finally, don’t fiddle with remakes when you don’t even have the proper lead pairing to do justice to the old film.
Arjun Kapoor and Sashaa Agha
Movie: Aurangzeb (2013)
Verdict: Arjun had a double role in this action film but still neither of them could manage to click with the character played Sashaa. It was a gross mismatch from beginning to end. Interestingly, Arjun’s debut showcased a sparkling chemistry he shared with Parineeti Chopra.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu
Movie: Aatma (2013)
Verdict: Although he’s one of the most sought after talents in B-Town today, Aatma didn’t really favour Nawaz — let alone, Bipasha. On an individual level, they were convincing on the silver screen as protagonist and antagonist but whenever they came together for a sequence, the bizarreness quotient took a leap of faith. On a hilarious note, the visible difference in their height has nothing to do with this verdict.
John Abraham and Kangna Ranaut
Movie: Shootout At Wadala (2013)
Verdict: Here’s a period film based on real-life folks where the filmi jodi turns out to be the weakest link in the entire setup. So much so even lovemaking scenes between them do very little to mitigate the hopeless romance between the two.
Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma
Movie: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013)
Verdict: Imran entered the scene with a dream debut in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na alongside Genelia D’Souza. Both of them clicked. However, he hasn’t been paired with anyone else since who would do justice to the chemistry a script demands. Even the fact that he’s young and starring opposite actresses of similar age category hasn’t worked its magic. Yet. Matru… was just one such case of apparent miscast. His restrained persona and Anushka’s vivaciousness didn’t go hand in hand.
Vivek Oberoi and Mallika Sherawat
Movie: Kismet Love Paisa Dilli (2012)
Verdict: After all, more often than not, the emphasis is given on the hero and heroine is relegated to trophy status. But KLPD proved to be a massive comedy of errors and this has very little to do with the story. Vivek, who once kept up with Rani Mukerji in Saathiya, seemed clueless with Mallika. Small surprise the film bombed. What’s worth noting here is both the actors exhibited more spark together during the promotional events than on the big screen.
