Fifteen films in 29 (1976-2005) years, out of which 13 were blockbusters. Very few filmmakers can match Subhash Ghai's track record. The producer-director-screenwriter tells CS about the five films he loved working on the most:

Karz (1980)
It was a different film in every aspect. Making a murder mystery is never easy, and this one had a reincarnation theme to it. And one of the biggest factors was the music. Karz's music was more western with a lot of pop influence. The perfect casting also helped the film. Needless to say, it was a turning point in my career (smiles).
Ram Lakhan (1989)
I had great fun working on this film. There is a very dramatic emotional scene in the film, where Rakhee breaks down before her sons, Anil (Kapoor) and Jackie (Shroff), who have turned enemies. That scene was written differently at the start, but while shooting I realised that I wanted to improvise. I wrote a few lines then and there. When we reshot the scene, Rakhee improvised so well on those dialogues that the entire unit was crying at the end.
Saudagar (1991)
It was again a very memorable film for me as it had two of the stalwarts of Indian cinemau00a0-- Dilip Kumar and Rajkumar. These two came together in my film after 1959. My biggest challenge was shooting the confrontation scene between the two. I had to really work on balancing the dialogues to create the desired impact on the audience.
Taal (1999)
This is a very special film in my career as it was a musical. I had to match every note of the music to the visuals, which was a task in itself. Moreover, the film had Aishwarya Rai, who was then famous as Miss World. The challenge was to break her image and cast her as this very real girl, Manasi.
Black & White (2007)
No one expected me to make a film like Black & White. It was a non-Subhash Ghai film in every aspect. I was very glad when it turned out well, surprising myself as well as others (laughs).
