The injury proved to be near fatal and Big B had to undergo multiple surgeries. He was even declared 'clinically dead' by doctors, till August 2, which is when the doctors administered a shot of adrenaline straight into his heart. His wife and actress Jaya Bachchan who was with him in the hospital, saw his toes move and exclaimed that he was alive. And this is how August 2 came to be known as Amitabh Bachchan's second birthday. Director Manmohan Desai even re-wrote the ending of the film 'Coolie', where Amitabh's character recovers from a near-fatal injury, just like in real life.
Amitabh Bachchan took to twitter to thank his fans and said that it was only prayers that kept him alive and he can never pay this debt. Even son Abhishek Bachchan tweeted saying,
