“I started here, with Gen Next, so to be the opening designer is amazing and special. At the same time, it’s a lot of pressure to set the tone for the coming week,” says Masaba Gupta, who will be opening the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014 (LFW), along with designer Amit Aggarwal.

While Aggarwal’s collection will showcase tribal influences like their weaving techniques and three dimensional jewellery, Gupta’s line will be a total contrast, themed around the poem, The Wanderess by Roman Payne.

“My muse is a Goan woman who is free-thinking and adventurous, yet delicate. She has very different views about the way she dresses and carries herself. I’ve given it a vintage feel with a lot of 1960s elements in the rendering. I’ve used lots of yellows and neon colours,” she reveals.
Throwing light on his collection, Aggarwal shares that he has paired couture dresses with menswear details to blend androgyny with the feminine. “The clothes are closer to the body and more fitted than my earlier collections. The structuring is minimal-yet-strong. My clothes are a blend of the fantastical and what a woman would love to wear,” he adds.
When quizzed on his counterpart for the opening show, Aggarwal is candid, “Masaba gets the current pulse beautifully, and depicts popular art that blends with high fashion. Starkly different, yet we both try and achieve the same goal ultimately — the goal to make beautiful things.” We’ll be in the front row.
