Sridevi surprised me with her dedication. Her astounding talent was no luck. It was well-deserved. She worked for it from childhood. I'm also a child actor, I've known her from her teens. She was still a child when she came to work with me. My mentor, K Balachander, sometimes gave me the responsibility of working with her, correcting her and shaping her acting and dancing.

She developed everyday [that] she learnt. I was astounded by her climb for which she worked hard. She was fond of me, and I was fond of her. We were working continuously, so our personal lives were on the periphery. The kind of dedication she had truly matched mine, and so it's no wonder that we were fond of each other.

My last meeting with Sridevi took place in January. We were not prone to showing emotion, but we hugged each other and I'm grateful for that hug. Our 1983 film Sadma's song [Yesudas's Surmayi Ankhiyon Mein] rings in my ears now. That's our lullaby for her.

Kamal Haasan was Sridevi's co-star in 27 films, including Sadma
