Hrithik Roshan-starrer 'Kaabil' may become the first fresh Bollywod release to hit theatres in Pakistan, following the lifting of ban on Indian content last year, if approved by that country’s Censor Board. A source from across the border tells hitlist, "The film was supposed to be presented to the Censor Board for clearance on Friday. However, since there were a few documents required from the customs [that didn’t arrive], Kaabil will now be presented to the censors only on Monday."
While murmurs of Rahul Dholakia’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, Raees, also hitting screens in Pakistan did the rounds recently, a unit hand reveals that the distributors of the film did not apply for its release in the neighboring country. Leading lady, Pak actress Mahira Khan stated in an interview to a news portal, "I am the first Pakistani actress who got the opportunity to work with Shah Rukh Khan as the main lead. But I feel that my success and fame has come under evil eyes due to which my film has not been able to release in Pakistan."
Indian film, television and radio content were banned in Pakistan following the escalation in tension between the countries in the aftermath of the September 2016 Uri attacks. However, in December, the Pak government lifted the ban with declining business being cited as the reason behind the decision. A leading distributor from Pakistan said, "Pakistan is the third highest consumer of Bollywood. Sultan did a business of $3million here. If Indian films continue to be screened here freely, then in the next two to three years, Pakistan can become the biggest overseas market for Bollywood films."
Kaabil producer Rakesh Roshan remained unavailable for comment.
