Singer Jonita Gandhi on working with Kolaveri Di composer, and singing in regional languages
Music has no language and this is best seen in Jonita Gandhi's discography. Despite being raised in Canada, she has explored singing in several regional languages - the most recent being the Tamil song, Iraiva, with Kolaveri Di composer Anirudh Ravichander. Gandhi tells mid-day how she "enjoys the challenge" of picking up different languages.

Tell us about Iraiva.
It's a duet with Anirudh for the film, Velaikkaran. It is unique, because two contrasting emotions are expressed in one track.
Are you more comfortable singing in Hindi as compared to other regional languages?
The biggest difference for me between singing in Hindi and other languages is the familiarity with the words. Other than that, there's not much of a difference.
Since you were brought up in Canada, was it difficult to sing in Indian languages?
I've grown up singing in Indian languages, so I have had adequate practise. When it comes to languages I don't know, I seek help from those who are familiar with them. I enjoy the challenge.
The Breakup Song helped you gain a toe-hold in B'wood. Did people support you initially?
What I love about this industry is that there's so much support for the members of the music fraternity. Sonu Nigam, AR Rahman and Salim Merchant have been my mentors.
