Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - Movie Reviews

What's it about: Manny (Romano) the mammoth, Sid (Leguizamo) the sloth, sabre-toothed tiger Diego (Leary) have been the inseparable trio of the Ice Age series. However, this time around things change when Manny and Ellie (Latifah) decide to become parents.

Diego is the first to leave the tribe, planting the seeds of separation in Sid's mind before leaving. But destiny has other plans for Sid, for when he stumbles upon three eggs beneath the icy surface.

His parental instincts awake and make him adopt them not knowing who's the real mother of those soon-to-be hatched baby dinosaurs! When the angry momma discovers her eggs are missing, she wreaks havoc and takes Sid with her to a distant place reminiscent of Jurassic Park.

Now it's up to Manny, Deigo and Ellie along with the possums to save their mate Sid. Luck shines upon them when they bump into Buck (Simon Pegg) a weasel who's the Jack Sparrow of the jungle, helping them find Sid.

What's hot: In a plot that has the sword of redundancy hanging on its neck, it's the effervescent Buck who captains this vessel.

Simon Pegg has proved his genius as an actor (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, etc) and now he uses his voice to bring life and colour to Buck, giving him that cunning edge that makes him stand out. Needless to say the animation is brilliant.

The possums Eddie (Josh Peck) and Crash (Seann William Scott) bring to the table a whole new level of craziness and whacky jokes.

What's not: The most successful animated flicks have been those that cater to all age groups.

However the writers of Ice Age 3 seem like they pre-decided to write the punches and one liners that are two extreme ends adult (a butterfly "coming out") and totally juvenile (Sid: It's a boy! Diego: That's a tail, Sid: It's a girl!).

Giving the film a 3D experience was totally unnecessary. In fact, there are barely any moments which make you go "wow" with your glasses on.

Love blossoms between Scrat (Chris Wedge), whose love is torn between his acorn and a foxy female (Karen Disher). Unfortunately, Scrat and his girlfriend's romance looks too contrived and staged.

What to do: Ice Age 3 is too cold for comfort and doesn't really warm up to its audience unlike its two solid predecessors.
