Multiplex chains began pitching for the telecast rights of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. IPL chief Lalit Modi even acknowledged it at a press meet recently by saying, "It is an ongoing process.
We have invited bids from the multiplexes. However, the multiplexes in the city in which the match is played will not show it live. For instance, a match held in Mumbai can't be shown there."
An industry source says, "The multiplexes wanted to show the matches following a drought of movies starting April 4. Apparently, the multiplexes cannot show the matches because of the Cinematography Act, 1952.
The Act states that all forms of media due for telecast on the big screen has to be censored and should obtain a certificate from the local censor board, something no live event can obtain.
Secondly, all media should in the 35mm format. On these two grounds, the 'plexes can't showcase live matches."
