Getting candid with the phunny girl

Three years ago, Aditi Mittal used to have a job in New York. Unfortunately, that didn't involve her making people laugh

Fortunately, she decided to quit by blaming everything on recession and moved back to India. Today, the 25-year-old is one of our country’s few women stand-up comedians who perform across the country. Apart from television, the bespectacled charmer is also a regular at live stage shows. Just back from a gig in Cochin, Aditi believes her genre of comedy is fast gaining momentum. In a freewheeling chat with CS, the Mumbai-based comic also gives a backdrop on what really pulled her towards the mic and several other funny thoughts:

Why comedy?
If I weren’t a comedian, I would have been that person who was trying to be a comedian! I simply love the sound of laughter. It’s a communal experience to see others laugh together. Besides, we as a nation are funny with our countless idiosyncrasies. There’s always something humourous going on somewhere. And being a woman, I bring a different point of view to the stage.

State of stand-up
It’s still nascent with an urban sensibility. On top of that, the audiences are very diverse with different mindsets so striking a common chord irrespective of background is the key. No wonder everybody laughs at taboo topics! I’ve performed in US and the basic difference I’ve observed is that audience abroad are used to the concept behind gigs. On the contrary, the public here doesn’t know what to expect so they grow impatient way too easily. But at the same time, they’ll make sure a clever thought gets appreciated and thoroughly enjoy the show.

Sex sells
Of course, I crack a lot of sex jokes because we all know that nothing tickles us like crass humour. We are a repressed society, after all! But the idea is to get beyond the char-gaali-char-taali routine and provide some naked truths that we otherwise shy away.

Idols
Johnny Lever is one of my all-time favourites. I also admire Tina Fey and Kirsten Wiig along with George Carlin and Bill Hicks.
