While celebs like Carmen Electra, Toni Braxton and Rihanna have rocked the half-shaved hair look, the style has caught on among Mumbai’s girls as well. Here’s the lowdown on how to wear it with panache

Fashion: Here's how you can rock the undercut hairstyle

Hairstyle

How to wear the look

>> Buzzed hair is easy to maintain and requires no additional fuss or products. It looks cool on both straight and curly hair. The buzzed side can be trimmed as often as you'd like to wear the style and the longer side needs nutrition and care depending on your hair type
>> Inspired by Toni Braxton's look, you can experiment with different mohawks and frohawks with the longer hair too.
>> Carving out designs on the shaved side is a great way to make your hair stand out.
>> If the unshaved parts of your hair are really short, you can still pull off long hairstyles by adding extensions. You can colour the extensions too.
>> You can experiment with accessories like hats, scarves and hair pins.
>> You can also transform your shaved hairstyle into a classy look suitable for night outs by putting it in a sleek bun like Charlize Theron (see pic).

How to acessorise the look: stylists advise

Clashing an edgy hair-cut with something girly makes for a cool look. Think out-of-the-box with pastels, pearls, flouncy skirts etc for an I'm-a-punk-in-2016 look. When wearing Indian, try creating an updated silhouette by pairing a traditional kurta with pleated pants for an androgynous feel.

Wearing oversized clothes like a boyfriend bomber or a denim jacket would work well with the buzzed hair. Finer accessories like thin rings, multiple thin neck chains work too.

Why does the undercut rock?
>> The two beauties which carried this look off the best were Rihanna and Charlize Theron. From Rihanna's rock concerts, to Charlize's red carpets, the hair cut made the look sizzle every time.

>> This hair cut is all about an expression of your personality and attitude. It's not for the shy or timid, if you're a girl with something to say, this hair cut will definitely help you get heard. This hair cut is suitable for most hair types, but what is more important is the right attitude and personality to pull it off.

>> What I love about this look is that it perfectly blends femininity and rebellious attitude in one iconic cut. While it's not a look many girls can pull off, it's definitely a look I'm seeing more and more in the model world. I did the hair and makeup for an online retail store's latest advert (pic above) and one of our nine models was chosen because of her hair cut. I also gave one of the contestants on India's Next Top Model an undercut hair style in the makeover episode.

Neysa Mendes says, "I'm fairly experimental with my hair, and like changing it every few years. It's usually a very spontaneous decision — it must happen the very same day!" The 32-year-old arts consultant believes a new hairstyle, allows her to be someone else for a while." And with the undercut, she only received compliments. "A few days after I got married, I buzzed the side of my hair, and cut it really short, not knowing that I still had one more traditional lunch to go to. So there I was, in a South Indian silk sari, with my crop, and everyone was just fine," she laughs. Mendes has curls, and doesn't use products. However, a little wax, or a serum, and a quick scrunching of the curls works on a bad hair day. "The undercut is pretty low maintenance. You can wear just about anything you want with varying lengths of hair,"

33-year-old Joanna Dukkipati was pregnant when she chose to get a new look. "I was at the start of my 2nd trimester when I got myself an undercut. It was a new phase of life  and what better way to start than with a new haircut. I wanted an outrageous cut because something absolutely out of the world was happening to me. Pregnancy gave me a lot of spunk," shares the event manager.  Dukkipati was amused at the reactions her haircut received. "The only elderly person who approved right away was my grandmother. The other elders were saying,'what have you done?' There was just a big eye roll," she shares, adding that the look works well with her curls. "The only product I used was coconut oil to keep my hair hydrated along with a good conditioner. The undercut hairstyle is an accessory itself and I've had great fun with it. I wore saris as well as shorts. My long earrings looked longer!"
