Dreaming big in Dharavi

The Poor Little Rich, a book by Rashmi Bansal and Deepak Gandhi, tells the story of Dharavi. It consists of stories of people who make up Dharavi, a slum full of energy, enterprise and hope in Mumbai.

It is a place where every hand is busy and every head is held high. While the residents could be miserable they choose to be happy. The book is a completely original and candid take on the largest slum in Asia and includes real life stories of the people for whom Dharavi is home.

Rashmi Bansal has already written three books. She is the best-selling author of Stay Hungry Stay Foolish, Connect the Dots and I Have a Dream. Her books have sold over half a million copies and have been translated into 10 languages.

In a professional career spanning three decades, he has worked with Tata Steel and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He currently divides his time between India and Canada.

The book takes the form of a tour through the maze and lets you meet inspiring individuals. “Every week, we would go there for research, to understand the people. The collected material could have made for a big book, but it would not have served the purpose. We thought of keeping the format easy to read,” said Rashmi Bansal.

Said Deepak Gandhi, “If it is sincerely written, people will always read the story. We are trying to bring Dharavi close to the public. We are not saying that we are the ultimate voice for them, but we are at least trying,” said Deepak Gandhi. Available at book stores across the city. The book is priced at Rs 250. u00a0
