Union Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday criticised celebrities who have made surrogacy a fashion and hobby.

Without naming anyone, Sushma Swaraj said that some celebrities who already have kids - both boys and girls - try to get another child through surrogacy.


Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are some of the celebrities who have had kids through surrogacy.

Shah Rukh Khan has three children with wife Gauri - Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Aamir Khan has two children - Junaid and Ira - with ex-wife Reena Dutta, and son Azad with Kiran Rao. Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan opted for surrogacy for the birth of youngest sons AbRam and Azad.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016. Union Cabinet gave nod to introduction of the bill seeking a complete ban on commercial surrogacy; only legally wedded Indian couples can opt for surrogacy. (Read full story) Sushma Swaraj headed the Group of Ministers (GoM) formed to look into the issue of surrogacy.
