Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan sent the country into a tizzy last week when he announced that one of Hollywood's sharpest minds, Christopher Nolan, is likely to visit India. Now, it's official! The Dunkirk director is headed to Mumbai in the last week of March, and will be headlining the event, Reframing the Future of Film, on March 31 and April 1. Organised by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur's Film Heritage Foundation, the event will focus on the need to preserve the medium of film in the digital age. It will include a private roundtable discussion and a public gala. World renowned visual artist Tacita Dean will accompany Nolan on the visit.

Nolan's love for the photochemical film is well-known - his World War II drama too was shot on large format film. The director stated that Mumbai was an important destination given the treasure trove that Indian cinema is. He said, "India has such wonderful cinema and such a rich history of art that everything needs to be done to not only encourage its proper preservation for future generations, but also reintroduce the film medium to the younger artistes and filmmakers in the country."

Dean and Nolan had previously come together in Los Angeles in 2015 to host the first event in the series, followed by events in London and Mexico. A vociferous advocate of the film, Dean said, "We need to keep the medium distinct from technology."

In India, the celebrated filmmaker and Dean will be joined by some of the brightest talents of Bollywood - Bachchan, Shyam Benegal and Anurag Kashyap - as they explore the importance of shooting on film and why it's essential to preserve it as a medium.

Bachchan said, "I hope this will be a wake-up call for our own film industry to support the cause of saving our film heritage." This is Nolan's second visit to the country; he had shot few sequences of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) in Rajasthan.
