11th Mumbai Film Festival: Day 2

The 11th Mumbai Film Festival takes off, the main venue being right in the hub of the film industry in Andheri, surrounded by film, and TV production offices.

The excellent selection this year, has some films that are unmissable. On top of the list (many recommended by Sachin Gandhi who selects films for the Calgary Film Festival, and sees a lot of films from all over the world.)

1) Katalin Varga: Peter Strickland's film about a woman who comes after many years, seeking revenge from a man who abandoned, is devastating cinema (says Sachin). The lead actresses Hilda Peter puts in such a brilliant performance.

2) Wrong Rosary: Charming light hearted Turkish film, by Mahmut Fazil Coskun is like something out of Chaplin in which a young muezzin falls in love with a woman training to be a nun.

3) Can Go Through Skin: Esther Rots's film that probes a woman's mind needs patience to watch, but is rewarding in the end.

4) Happy Go Lucky: The delightful British film by the redoutable Mike Leigh about a young woman who is determined to be happy.

5) Genova: A very polished and charming film from Michael Winterbottom, about a man who moves to Genoa with his two daughters after his wife's death and how they all cope with the loss.

6) Goodbye Solo: Ramin Bahrani's third film after the well-regarded Man Push Cart and Chop Shop is just as interesting about an friendship between two men.

7) The Blessing: This Danish film by Heidi Maria Feisst, tackles a rarely seen topic of postpartum depression u2014 a woman starts doubting her ability to be a mother.

8) Little Soldier: Annette Olesen's film about a woman soldier forced to work for her father's flesh trade, deals with a lot of interesting issues, and a powerful performance from the lead actresses.

9) Treeless Mountain: A heart-rending film by So Young Kim, about two young Korean girls struggling to survive when their mother leaves them to look for their father u2014a bit too bleak though.

10) In the Loop: Armando Iannucci's witty and funny film about the current 'hawkish' political situation in the world.

And there's more to unfold over the coming week.. one of the joys of attending a film is discovering hidden treasures...
