Bollywood actress Alaya F is currently in the coastal state of Goa ringing in her 27th birthday with four of her closest friends. This is ritual she follows every birthday, where she calls 5-10 of her closest people and has an intimate party. Ask her why Goa, and she says, "It's very convenient as it is close by. Also, my mom (Pooja Bedi) stays between Goa and Mumbai. Since she stays a lot in Goa she has some great recommendations. So it is a lot of great food and drinks. It's the perfect birthday place." Alaya F reflects on the year 2024 With the year nearing its end, it is also good a time for reflection. Alaya F was seen in two very distinct films this year- 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' and 'Srikanth'. Both films were very different from each other. While 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' was a star-studded action film, 'Srikanth' was an inspiring tale based on a real-life story. Ask her what these two films taught her, Alaya shares, "I got to work with very talented people. I had the privilege of working with Rajkummar in Srikanth. I had the opportunity to work with Akshay sir, Prithvi sir and Tiger in something like 'BMCM'. All the movies I have done have taught me an enormous amount. With BMCM, it is the first time I got to do commercial things like be a part of a song, look glam and act differently than my previous film. It gave me the experience of being on a hard-core action set with explosions and all of that happening. It is a very different learning." She added, "With Srikanth, I got to work with Raj who is a masterclass in acting and performing. It was so inspiring and made me realise about the kind of work I want to do in my life. Srikanth gave me a big moment of clarity that this is the kind of work I want to do. I want to do work that means something, that pushes me in a lot of ways. I want to do a lot of good cinema and that is also my takeaway from this year. I want to focus on finding great scripts and great stories." Alaya: Ready to make braver choices A look at Alaya F's filmography of four years and one may feel that the choices she has made have been carefully made. Well, she believes that she has been lucky with the roles she has been offered and credits her debut film 'Jawani Jaaneman' for the same. "After my first film people started seeing me as an actor very early on. My performance was reviewed very well for my first film. After that, I got lots of acting roles. People wanted to see me in different characters. I just got lucky with what I got offered at that time. But now I am actively making a choice to do the films I want to do. I am going to be very clear with the type of roles, characters I will be doing. I will be a little more brave with the choices I make." Alaya feels that roles written for women today are much more refreshing than the ones being written a decade ago. Despite being a newcomer, she says that she had a good amount of screen time in films like 'Jawaani Jaaneman' and 'Freddy' where she shared screen with stars like Saif Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan respectively. "For the longest time I think I ran away from female-centric roles because I did not want to take up too much pressure as a new actor. I didn't want to take a film that was resting on my shoulders. But that is one fear I am trying to liberate myself from. I want to take more chances I want to do roles that have a lot of range. I think that is one big change that I am actively making in my life," she shared. Alaya says she is also quite objective when it comes to reviewing her performance and can easily look back and tell which scene she could have done better and which she could not. When asked about her favourite performance of herself, she says, "I think 'Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat' and Jawaani Jaaneman'. I shot both films at the same time. There was a beautiful rawness at that time before you come in and get technical and you start focusing on your angles and your look. At that time I was unbothered about everything else. There is so much innocence in those performances. So those will always be special".

28 November,2024 11:25 AM IST | MumbaiVeteran actress Zarina Wahab has defended the abuse allegations made by women of showbiz against her actor-husband Aditya Pancholi. The duo that fell in love on the sets of Kalank Ka Tika, tied the knot in 1986. However, Aditya made headlines for his infidelity, first with Pooja Bedi, and later with Kangana Ranaut. Zarina Wahab on Aditya Pancholi’s extra-marital affairs In 1993, Aditya Pancholi was rumoured to be having an affair with Pooja Bedi. They were candid about dating each other, but things ended on a sour note after Pooja filed a police complaint against Aditya, accusing him of sexual abuse. In 2017, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut alleged that she was in an abusive relationship with Aditya when she was a newcomer and that he misused her. Reacting to the claims, Zarina Wahab told Lehren, “I was always aware of his affairs, but I never questioned him. I only cared about how he treated me when he was home. I ignored asking him questions because it would have made him fearless. I was completely prepared for him to have affairs.” Zarina Wahab defends Aditya Pancholi despite abuse allegations Speaking about the allegations made by Pooja and Kangana, Zarina defended her husband and asserted that he has never been abusive. “He is such a sweetheart. For once, I might beat him. But, he is very sweet. His girlfriends accused him of these things because they didn't get what they wanted. I was always nice to Kangana. She often visited my home. He was very nice to her. I don't know what went wrong. I just can tell that I saw what he couldn't and eventually that happened,” she added. Rape case against Aditya Pancholi In 2019, a rape case was filed against Aditya Pancholi by a renowned Bollywood actress. He received an anticipatory bail for the same. 28 November,2024 10:29 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentMumbai, Hyderabad, and now it’s back to the Maximum City for Salman Khan as he gives shape to Sikandar. After the extensive Hyderabad schedule was wrapped up mid-November, director AR Murugadoss began the Mumbai leg on Monday with the supporting cast. Yesterday, as Khan joined the proceedings, the actor-director duo commenced work on what is said to be one of the most ambitious scenes of the action fare—a fight sequence set aboard a train. Rashmika Mandanna Sources tell us that the an elaborate set of a train has been built at a Borivali studio. We’re told the sequence has been in pre-production for months as Murugadoss, known for his flair for action as evidenced in Ghajini (2008) and Holiday (2014), wants it to stand out as a signature moment in the movie. A production insider shares, “The scale of this scene is massive. It involves raw, gritty action as Salman’s character is seen taking on a gang of baddies. The director’s brief to the action choreographer was to make it bloody and vengeful. Salman shot the set-piece on Wednesday evening with only a crowd of 30. On Tuesday, Murugadoss separately filmed the crowd-heavy sequences with approximately 350 people.” Due to security reasons, the team is not shooting for long periods at the same location. As soon as the superstar wraps up his part at the Borivali studio on Thursday, the crew will move to the next venue. “The shoot will continue till January-end at different locations in the city,” adds the insider. Sikandar, also starring Rashmika Mandanna, sees Khan portray a ruthless businessman, who has a change of heart after seeing the rampant corruption in the country.
28 November,2024 09:57 AM IST | Mumbai | Mohar BasuWhat comes after roti, kapda aur makaan? It should be entertainment if one asks Sushil Chaudhary, the man who aims to take cinemas to every nook and corner of the country. Chaudhary is the founder and CEO of the mobile theatre company PictureTime that screens films at inflatable theatres across the country. “Everybody was talking about it but we took the cinema literally to people,” says Chaudhary, who is currently in Panjim, Goa as PictureTime is the screening partner of the 55th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI). It’s a sweet home coming for PictureTime. Eight years ago, the company began their association with IFFI with the screening of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning. It continued for the next three years until pandemic played a spoilsport. In the last two years, Chaudhary says, the company was regrouping and missed coming to IFFI. “So, when NFDC and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting approached us, we immediately said yes. The number one problem for IFFI was the number of screens. It only has INOX. This year, we have put two inflatable theatres.” If one happened to be in or around Panjim over the last week, it’s impossible to miss the IFF hype— the posters, standees and signboards won’t let it happen anyway. And once entered the primary IFFI venue of Kala Academy, one could spot the red coloured PictureTime inflatable theatre anyone could walk in to catch a film. The playlist at this theatre ranges from Pa Ranjit’s latest work, Thangalaan, Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR (2022), Ranbir Kapoor’s much-loved 2011 romance Rockstar to Hindi film classics like Guide (1965), Bobby (1973) and Jane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983). Unlike the rest of the festival, which needs a prior approved accreditation, PictureTime theatre makes no distinction. So, at a given time, the theatre is filled with festival attendees and non-delegates. Another such inflatable theatre is operating in Sanquelim. Not just that, PictureTime has also set up a mobile open-air screen that has been travelling across North and South Goa. Chaudhary is confident that PictureTime will grow bigger by the next edition of IFFI. We wanted to put five theatres time but couldn’t due to budget constraints. But next year we will do it in a bigger manner,” he says. Chaudhary’s self-belief is not without a reason. From the inception of his company till now, he and his team have put inflatable theatres in more than 600 locations across the country. “These many locations in 18 states. In a state like Orissa, which has very less screen density, I have screened films in all its 29 districts. More than 70 percent of the districts in Orissa have no cinema penetration,” he shares. It’s rather unfortunate that for a cinema-obsessed country, the magic of movies continues to elude a large population. “India not only has poor theatre density but also doesn’t have a clean entertainment option. For filmmakers to make movies and for movies to make money, the only answer are the cinemas, not OTT,” Chaudhary asserts. Trade experts say that India has around 9,000 screens. For context, let’s look at China, Chaudhary points out. “In 2007, it had more than 3000 screens and in 2015, it had around 55000 screens. Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which released in 2016, made Rs 400 crores in India but Rs 1800 crores in China,” he says. Chaudhary is singularly focused on making films available to the country's remotest areas. “The government recognises 117 districts as having below-poverty line issues. And in all those districts, we are setting up theatres.” The purpose is to ensure a safe, enjoyable recreational experiences for the youth and families in small towns. "You hear the stories of couples in small towns being harassed for going out and spending time together. People in the interiors want togo out in quiet, peace and safety but they do not have any place because if you go to the single screens, you are labelled. We managed to convince state governments and the centre government that entertainment zones are very important," Chaudhary mentions. A 150-seater inflatable theatre takes a couple of days to set up. Five to six people can set up the full screen, and another such team can run full operation, we are told. "The idea is to make the theatre at a very efficient cost and keep the monthly operational cost below Rs 2 lakhs but do not compromise on the quality," he shares. So people get an air-conditioned theatre with Dolby 5.1 big screen and stories that are both Indian and foreign. And because at the heart of PictureTime is to make cinema available to low-income areas, the ticket pricing is accordingly. "100 Rs is our standard ticket price. Add Rs 50 for popcorn. The pricing depends on the expenditure power of a place as well on the film's producer and distributor. Like in Chhattisgarh, we have kept the ticket price to Rs 70, in Rajasthan it’s Rs 150-200. Normally, when a family of four goes out to watch a movie, it ends up spending Rs five-six thousand. We want it to all fall under Rs 1000," Chaudhary says. Providing a wholesome experience to families has been another big pursuit of Chaudhary and his team at PictureTime. "We are creating family plexes. The first one will be in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. December 24 is the inauguration. The family plex will have nine retail stores, including food court, and live performances. Cinema theatre should anchor this arrangement and it’s a lifestyle we are taking to these places. Post the ’90s revolution, when the multiplex culture entered India, theatres went inside the malls. What we are trying to do is take malls to the theatres. So, imagine a theatre and a Dilli Haat type set up around it. So, I am creating a rural mall. We have tried this arrangement in Goa and other places and it has worked." Chaudhary has found patrons in Indian filmmakers. "During our first IFFI association, we could show the theatre to filmmaker Kabir Khan and other senior people in the industry. Kabir Khan called the experience brilliant. Every filmmaker I met, from SS Rajamouli to Siddharth Roy Kapur, loved the idea and they all asked me to keep adding as many screens as possible."

We all went through a bad time, but I believe in one thing: 'If you spoil anybody's life with lies, take it as a loan; it will come to you with interest’.” “We waited until he was proven not guilty. It took 10 years, but he is out of it, and I am happy. It has affected Sooraj's career. Everyone knew what she used to do. I don't want to open my mouth. I don’t want to belittle myself,” she added. Sooraj Pancholi’s reaction to the verdict Reacting to the acquittal Sooraj said in an earlier statement, "The verdict has taken 10 long painful years and sleepless nights, But today I have not only won this case against me but I have also won my dignity and confidence back. It took a lot of courage to face the world with such heinous allegations, I hope and pray to God that nobody goes through what I have gone through at such a young age. I don't know who will give me these 10 years of my life back to me, but I am glad that this has finally come to an end not only for me but especially for my family. There is nothing bigger than peace in this world." About Jiah Khan’s suicide Jiah Khan was found dead in her Mumbai home on June 3, 2013. Based on a letter seized on June 10, which was purportedly written by her, Mumbai Police booked Sooraj Pancholi under section 306 (abatement to suicide) and arrested him. Jiah's mother Rabia Khan alleged that her daughter was murdered. In October 2013, Rabia moved to the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe in the case while alleging that her daughter had been murdered. On the order of the Bombay High Court, the CBI took over the probe from the Maharashtra Police in July 2014. Rabia claimed that her daughter was in an abusive relationship with Sooraj Pancholi. Sooraj and Jiah started dating in September 2012.
