Women’s empowerment involves promoting women's self-worth, enabling them to make their own choices, and influencing social change for themselves and others. It is a fundamental human right and essential for a peaceful, prosperous world. Women’s rights and empowerment have become major global movements, recently gaining momentum and breaking new ground.

A notable session titled "Nari Shakti" was held in Uttar Pradesh. It promoted women's empowerment and encouraged participation in the movement. During the panel discussion, the panellists discussed the evolving lifestyles of women artisans associated with handicrafts.

Panel 4 of the TOI Dialogues in Uttar Pradesh featured prominent women leaders, organised and powered by the Times of India group, who shared their insights on empowering women in the state. The panel was moderated by popular podcaster Richa.

The session, "Empowering 'Nari Shakti': Fostering Women's Leadership and Entrepreneurship," included distinguished speakers such as Padmasree awardee Runa Banerjee (Indian Social Worker and co-founder of SEWA), Divya Shukla (Founder of Samarth Foundation), Anandi Agarwal (Chairperson of the Women Entrepreneur Cell of the Indian Industries Association), and Vartika Punjabi (COO of Ada Chikan).

The majority of the panelists’ thoughts, including Runa Banerjee, an Indian Social Worker and Co-Founder of SEWA, and Vartika Punjabi, COO of Ada Designer Chikankari Studio, highlighted the inspiring impact that Chikankari has had on women's empowerment. Their insights left the audience feeling hopeful and inspired for the future of women's empowerment.

Padmasree awardee Runa Banerjee discussed the transformative journey of training over 20,000 women in Chikankari over 40 years. Initially earning around Rs. 3,000, these women now earn Rs. 6,000, and if they work for well-known designers, they can earn up to Rs. 9,000 as a minimum wage. This change underscores Chikankari's role in empowering women financially.

Vartika Punjabi, COO of Ada Designer Chikankari Studio, highlighted how Digital India has revolutionised Chikankari product sales online, significantly enhancing profit margins. Discovering timeless, handcrafted, luxurious Chikankari products has become more accessible, adding grace to ethnic wardrobes worldwide. In the past, enthusiasts had to travel to specific states or rely on intermediaries to purchase these items.

However, the digital era has boomed Chikankari shopping, with retailers creating their websites and opening warehouses, making these beautiful products accessible globally. Ada Designer Chikankari Studio has been instrumental in making Chikankari a household name.

Moreover, Vartika Punjabi emphasised that as they delved deeper into understanding the lifestyles of these women artisans outside of their occupation, through discussions, they discovered how these women perceive personal identity, financial stability, and security. These women worked towards financial independence from their families via stable incomes from this local handicraft.

Brands like Ada Designer Chikan Studio have been at the forefront of paying fair wages to the artisans who were directly involved in the manufacturing process of Lucknow Chikankari. With increased awareness about the tedious manufacturing process for this handcraft, there has been immense global appreciation for the skill and labour that goes into making these unique garments. It is noteworthy that even with advanced technology in international fashion today, this beauty has no alternative. This is the reason this craft thrives even today.

Ada Designer Chikankari Studio, founded by Vinod Punjabi, a third-generation entrepreneur, has been instrumental in reinventing “Classical Chikankari” for today's audience. Co-founder Rhea Punjabi has played a pivotal role in digitalising the craft of Lucknow Chikankari, making handmade Chikankari products a household name.

Vartika Punjabi, now leading Ada to new heights, emphasised that women's empowerment goes beyond financial freedom. It’s about living with dignity and maintaining a sustainable livelihood. Ada’s foundation was laid with this thought in mind, empowering local artists and helping them succeed.

Their aim as a company has been to deliver this unique handicraft globally at Lucknowi prices at everyone’s doorstep while ensuring they get an opportunity to enjoy the complete experience of Lucknawi Chikankari.

Ada Designer Chikan Studio exemplifies how women's empowerment and Chikankari are intricately linked. They support over 30,000 women artisans through their efforts, providing them with self-reliance and financial independence opportunities. Ada has revolutionised the sale of Chikankari products in physical showrooms and online, making this beautiful craft accessible globally and enhancing the livelihoods of countless women.
