Established by Dr. Sultan A Pradhan with a noble vision of offering comprehensive, high-quality care to patients, the institute emerged from the pressing need to address the epidemic levels of head & neck cancer in India. Each year, over 5.5 lakh patients - more than 1500 cases daily - receive a diagnosis of head & neck cancer, constituting 27% of all cancer cases in the country, a stark comparison to the 4% in the West. Thus, a dedicated institute was imperative, one that encompasses preventive, promotive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services for head & neck cancer, alongside programs to bolster head & neck surgery in teaching hospitals, especially in the public sector.
Situated near Dockyard Road Station in Mazgaon, Mumbai, the 99-bed comprehensive cancer hospital is a part of the CanCare Trust, a Public Charitable Trust, developed through a PPP with the MCGM. Offering a spectrum of comprehensive care including surgical & medical oncology, radiation oncology, onco pathology, laboratory medicine, advanced imaging services, and palliative care, the institute is committed to delivering quality cancer care at reasonable rates, aligning its charges with those of the Tata Memorial Centre. Additionally, it extends subsidized care to economically weaker sections of society. Since commencing operations on August 15, 2023, the institute has successfully completed over 1400 treatment procedures and provided consultations to over 17000 patients.
The institute prides itself on having an esteemed panel of doctors, which includes Dr. Sultan Pradhan, Dr. Tapan Saikia, Dr. Prathamesh Pai, Dr. R Kannan, Dr. Vani Parmar, Dr. Azmat Doctor, Dr. Aditya Vora, Dr. Roshan Chinoy, Dr. Sharmila Agarwal, and Dr. Asif Momin.
Central to the institute's ethos is its multidisciplinary approach, where a team of esteemed oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and support staff collaborates to provide personalized care tailored to each patient's needs. From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, patients are embraced with compassion and support, guiding them through their journey with dignity.
Beyond clinical pursuits, the institute aims to serves as a hub for research and education, nurturing the next generation of oncologists. Through collaborative research and academic partnerships, it endeavors to unravel the complexities of cancer, paving the way for advancements in treatment and prevention.
Yet, what truly distinguishes the institute is its unwavering dedication to patient welfare, community outreach, and rehabilitation centres. Beyond its walls, it extends a helping hand to the underprivileged, offering screenings and awareness programs. The Rehabilitation Centre at the institute is operated by a devoted team of volunteers, many of whom are cancer survivors or caregivers themselves. These individuals offer invaluable support to patients as they navigate their journey in coping with this disease.
HNCII stands as a symbol of hope and progress in the battle against head and neck cancer. Through its dedicated efforts and compassionate care, HNCII shines as a beacon, guiding individuals along the challenging journey of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. With each life it touches, the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Head & Neck Cancer Institute of India reaffirms its commitment to health and humanity.
