This Doctor reveals your Ultimate Guide to Eternal Confidence

Dr. Shamoly Khera

The ultimate book on Confidence, ‘Bedazzle’ completes a year. Author Dr. Shamoly Khera opens up about why she chose such a rare subject for her debut book and how confidence can be built on a daily basis.

How has the response been to your debut book ‘Bedazzle – The Art & Science of Eternal Confidence’ so far?

When I was writing Bedazzle, I knew this will have an impact on innumerable minds. However, this kind of unprecedented response was truly unexpected. I feel absolutely touched when readers are reaching out with positive comments of how the book has impacted them. I have had some great learnings in my life, which I wish I had experienced earlier. I wish for readers to learn from these enriching experiences, so that they get faster to their purpose and use that time to master their craft.

Why choose Confidence as the subject of your debut book?

When I started my practice as a Public Speaking Coach, I realized that I cannot build confident individuals based on body language and impressive voice alone. Their confidence needs to be built on the belief level, from the core. Only then does the body, voice, expression, all sync together to emanate a power that the individuals has been craving. I wanted to help people build a strong belief system based on what they think of themselves, and that’s what translates to bedazzling confidence. That’s also where the name came from – when you are truly confident about your abilities, even in your failed attempts, you continue to bedazzle, no matter what the outcome of the situation is. This book was created as that bedside confidence coach that will elevate you every single day.

What kind of routine do you follow when writing?

Writing is an activity that needs a deep flow state – just like an artist may need. In our uber-busy lives full of distractions I learnt early on that the only way to write in a flow would be to keep all of these distractions away from your writing environment. I ensure I sit in my study room for at least 2 hours, locked away from my phone, social media or any human interaction. Waiting for inspiration to strike is futile. It’s a discipline that rewards you if you are consistent.

You are a TV Presenter as well as a Speaking coach , besides being an author and running a media house. How do you juggle multiple hats?

Spend a lot of time mastering what you do, one thing at a time. When I was working as a TV presenter, I focused on presenting and making TV shows, truly understanding what goes behind creating an engaging show. When I started coaching, I would give it 8-10 hours a day, with single-minded focus. Now my routine may look like a combination of each of these – few hours at my media house, interspersed with hours of coaching and some days of the week focused on presenting & shoots. If you practice more than one profession, spend enough time mastering each craft. Do not jump into multiple things at the same time. Any craft needs 10,000 hours of practice to truly build your own style of craft, and that builds confidence of craft, such that you should be able to wake up from your sleep and dive into it, even if you don’t have much time for preparation. Always find the best in each field and think of how you can do the same thing in your own unique style.

How true! How can we sustain confidence on a daily basis?

Confidence is built by everything we do successful. I always. suggest to focus  on collecting small wins while reaching the big one. There will be lot of downs on our long term goal journeys that things look down or may not look encouraging. These are the times we can pull motivation from our small wins – it can be small everyday goals that we achieve, that strengthen our belief in our own abilities. Social validation in the form of social media serves as a great boost to a lot of people but it’s also addictive and vague on a daily basis. I strongly believe that people who can be their own cheerleaders on a daily basis have more sustenance of confidence than those who depend on outside factors for motivation boost.

Amazing. What’s next on the cards?

My next book is ready and in process. I am very excited for this book because the subject has been very close to my heart since a while, and I knew someday it had to be addressed. Will be happy to reveal soon when the time is right.

Can’t wait to know more. Lastly, what would be your advice to young writers?

There is nothing called writer’s block. Our mind loves such concepts because it justifies our procrastination. I believed I had this block for many years because at the end of the day – writing means putting your work out in the open to judge – and in our heads we all are amazing before are art is served. I would ask all writers to remove any fear of judgement of their work and just get to it. The more you write, the better you get. Your first few works may be something that may not make you proud but once you get past your own average work, greatness flows. Because only when you have experienced the mundane can you create the extra-ordinary.
