Science-Backed Hair Care Tips

Your diet, the weather, pollution, and the way you care for your hair all play a crucial role in maintaining your crowning glory. Learn how a healthy diet and proper hair care can keep your mane a step ahead of the competition.-

1. Take Care of Itchy Scalp

An itchy, dry, and flaky scalp may indicate that you need to rinse the shampoo out of your hair more thoroughly. Leaving shampoo on your scalp can cause irritation. If you have a rash and an itchy scalp, you might have allergic contact dermatitis. People who dye their hair frequently experience this. The culprit is often a dye ingredient called para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is found in black hair dyes. You could also be allergic to conditioner, shampoo, or another product that comes into contact with your scalp. If this is the case, you are likely to develop an itchy rash on your scalp and any other skin that the product comes into contact with. With Summer and monsoon just around the corner, you shouldn't neglect this as this could lead to hair loss, thin hair and other hair related problems. One of the best ways to solve this is to use medicated antifungal shampoo like Ketoconazole Shampoo. They aid in getting rid of dandruff, scaly patches, and the itching caused by seborrheic dermatitis. Shampoos may contain 1% to 2% ketoconazole as an active ingredient. They may require different application methods, such as daily or every other day shampooing.

2. Massage Your Scalp

According to research, massaging your scalp helps reduce tension and relieve stress. By increasing blood flow to your scalp, your hair follicles will be healthy, promoting hair growth.

You can use a homemade hair oil made from natural ingredients to massage your hair. The best way to do so is with your fingertips and medium pressure. Massage your scalp with warm hair oil twice a week before shampooing for best results.

3. Condition Your Hair

You can use conditioner to moisturize and hydrate your hair. To prevent tangles and frizz, apply it evenly to the ends of your hair after shampooing. Some conditioners are formulated with natural ingredients such as jojoba and aloe vera that deeply nourish your hair and help keep it healthy.

4. Get Enough Sleep

According to Ayurvedic Science, lack of adequate sleep can disturb your Vata dosha, resulting in split ends and dry hair. Your body can restore itself with the right amount of restful sleep. In order to function at their best, adults need at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

5. Manage Stress & Exercise Regularly

According to research, stress can impact your hair’s health by causing an imbalance. Stress can inhibit the growth of new hair strands. This also affects your body's hormonal balance, resulting in problems such as hair loss. By exercising regularly, you can manage stress more effectively.

6. Protect Your Hair Before Heat Styling

Even though excessive exposure to heat can damage your hair, there are times when styling your hair is unavoidable. You can style your hair naturally, but you might still want to reach for your curlers and straighteners at the end. As you grab all your tools and tricks to achieve beautiful, swinging hair, don't forget to use a heat protectant as one of the essential hair care remedies. Spraying a protective spray layer can shield your hair from the heat and prevent damage.

7. Use A Wide-toothed Comb

Wet hair is susceptible and fragile to breakage. Let your hair dry before brushing it with a wide-toothed comb. Such a comb will prevent hair damage.

8. Follow a Healthy Diet

Hair follicles mainly consist of protein, which is essential for hair growth. According to a study, a lack of protein in the diet can cause hair loss.  Research has shown that increasing biotin consumption can improve hair growth in those with a biotin deficiency.

Here are some of the best foods you can eat to promote hair growth.

>>    Berries
>>    Spinach
>>    Fatty Fish
>>    Sweet Potatoes
>>    Avocados
>>    Nuts
>>    Seeds

Hair Care Myths Vs Facts

Having discussed some of the best science-backed tips for hair care, it’s time to address some common myths and see if there is any truth to them or not -

1. Myth: Shampooing causes hair loss

Fact: Shampooing doesn't make your hair grow faster, and it won't cause your hair to fall out either. Cleaning your hair is necessary to keep it healthy.

2. Myth: Frequent brushing makes hair look healthier

Fact: This is now known to damage your hair. By brushing, you pull out hair that is not yet ready to fall out and break healthy hair. Don't work excessively on the scalp when brushing.

3. Myth: Hair grows faster when you trim it regularly

Fact: Hair growth happens at the scalp. How fast (or slow) your hair sprouts has nothing to do with how often you trim it. Regular trimming prevents split ends and hair breakage.

4. Myth: Taking out one grey hair will result in multiple grey hairs sprouting from the scalp

Fact: Hair follicles produce melanin, which is responsible for its colour. When hair cells stop producing melanin pigment, hair turns grey or white. Therefore, plucking grey hair will not increase their number.

5. Myth: Hair grows back thicker after you shave it

Fact: Your hair grows from healthy follicles on your scalp. Shaving your head does not increase your scalp's number or quality of healthy hair follicles. It also won't make your hair thicker.

2. Minoxidil 5% Solution

This popular hair loss treatment, also known as Rogaine, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This over-the-counter treatment can be used to treat male and female pattern baldness. Basically, it works by elongating the growth phase of hair and partially enlarging hair follicles. Your scalp will have more hair coverage when you have more follicles in the growth phase.

Male pattern baldness can be effectively treated with minoxidil. According to a 2002 study, participants who used 5 per cent topical minoxidil over 2 per cent topical minoxidil saw faster results and 45% more hair growth over 48 weeks.

In addition to this, Minoxidil can also be effective for women. In a 2004 study, 5 per cent topical minoxidil was superior to 2 per cent topical minoxidil.

In a 48-week study, both the 5 per cent and 2 per cent hair loss treatments helped improve psychological perceptions of hair loss in women who experienced female pattern hair loss. The treatment is not recommended for people who are breastfeeding or pregnant.

3. Biotin Hair Gummies

This is a relatively newer entry in the hair care industry. They usually come in packs of 30 or 60 chewable gummies designed to late for a month or two. Vitamins are essential for healthy hair.
