Kawasi: R&B’s New Soul Aching Architect

Kawasi

When you think of R&B, legends: Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, Prince, Usher, and Fantasia may come to mine, but hopefully one day, Kawasi, hopes to be on the list of those effervescent Icons. If you know music, the origins of Blues have history dipped in the unvarnished expressions of grief, anger, pain, and pride.

The soothsayers of those stories used their firsthand experience of what it was like growing up in a world or society that treated them unfairly and used the sheer force of the that world to silence their stories. Kawasi comes as a predecessor of those same fears and linked trauma from that pain. His stories are rooted in childhood abandonment, poverty, lack of resources. There is gut-wrenching truth in the south that entire communities worked overtime to ensure that people looked like him became another number added to a statistic.

Graduating with honors from Morehouse College, Kawasi, made it his mission to push humanity forward with his music and the stories he chooses to tell with its lyrics. This was seen in his most recent release of Black Tears - released during the height of protest, after the unlawful murder of George Floyd. With Black Tears, Kawasi anchored centuries of pain for Black People around the world. With this record he specifically highlighted the disadvantages and pillaging of Blacks in America and how they feel their integrity was robbed from them by those who swore to treat them equally and fairly under the law.

Kawasi is geared in upholding the idea that black men should be renaissance men with social consciences. His lifelong commitment to service is so much bigger than one person. Kawasi’s music is on a path to carve unchartered territory in todays popular music.

We know two things:
1.) Kawasi is here to stay
2.) Kawasi will always reflect the times.
