‘Belong To Yourself’ Promotes Self-Love, Emotional Wellbeing For An Empowered Life

Pinky D Kansara

1. Tell us something about 'Belong to yourself’ and what is the work you are doing on this

Belong to yourself is all about empowerment and being true to your authentic self. In today's society, it is common for people to try and fit in so as to be accepted by others, often sacrificing their true selves in the process. A lot of people are also into pleasing others for acceptance.

Belonging to yourself means respecting your relationships while being your authentic self in all of them. When you are empowered, you are less dependent on others and this allows the formation of healthy relationships, without constant need for validation and acceptance. This allows others to understand and accept you for who you truly are, without any false expectations. Being alone should not make you feel lonely, but rather provide a sense of solitude that allows for creativity and self-reflection. It is important to have a strong sense of self, especially when it comes to fulfilling emotional needs. Belonging to yourself means not seeking validation or approval from others, but rather empowering yourself to create your path, and in the process, also allowing, and inspiring other people to start their journey of self-love and acceptance.

2. Tell us about yourself, your background, and how it shaped your current role as a therapist and consultant

Talking about myself is always a bit challenging, but let me try to do myself justice. I grew up in a family of five sisters, and I'm the fourth in line. Initially, my parents faced pressure from their families to have a son, which indirectly made us sisters aware from a very early age to be able to be self-managed, empowered, and have a voice of our own and guess I took this up to have their legacy lived through my work like a son would, not to prove them or the world anything, but as my own passion and dedication towards my work towards better lives.

However, they always empowered us to have a voice, and my opinion mattered. My passion for my work was encouraged and supported by my parents, and they never pressured me to conform to societal norms of marriage and having children. I spent 27 years in the corporate world, including 20 years as an HR professional and in a senior leadership role, pan India, I feel fulfilled as a woman, having nurtured my team and helped them grow. As a counsellor and therapist, I have a capacity to understand others better and a passion for helping people. I have a deep understanding of human emotions and don't talk idealistically. Instead, I focus on shifting thought processes and creating real change in someone's life.

3. What are your key areas of expertise and who do you work with/ plan to work with in the near future

It's not just about having the knowledge of psychology or counselling sessions, but also have the ability to understand a person's unique personality and needs when it comes to healing. It's not a mechanical process that can be rushed or forced, and it requires flexibility and patience. It also demands dedication to create awareness around the importance of emotional well-being and taking the time to work on it before collaborating with others. The right mindset is equally important to help others before taking on too much. Healing is a delicate process that cannot have any deadlines, and it's important to understand that everyone's journey is different. Emotional well-being is just as important as financial and social well-being. Also, currently I am working on my own, focusing on a select set of people, who understand my process. In the near future, I do aim to connect and collaborate with other stakeholders to enhance and reach out to empower more people and bring awareness for them to be able to help themselves by believing in their own power.

4. Tell us about your plans with the 'Belong to yourself' initiative.

I aim to create more platforms where people can share their stories. It's important to talk about our experiences so as to find support because it can help us heal and feel fulfilled. Everyone has a story, and as we age, we accumulate experiences that shape who we are. Most people have a story that needs to be told and heard, inspiring others to overcome their struggles. To heal others, it’s important to let them feel comfortable and first be ready to share our own struggles which makes them not ashamed of how they feel.

However, they often keep their emotions, hurt and other negative feelings to themselves, and struggle as they don’t know how to handle their emotions and feelings. This can also make them feel choked as they don’t know how to express or confide in others. Over time, this emotional suppression can take the form of various mental illnesses, leading them to become more isolated and feel lost, hopeless, and helpless.

Through my work, I want to create tools that can help people feel heard, seen, and understood. Through self-help books, audio, and write-ups, I want to be instrumental in helping people find their own paths. I also want to encourage discussions about uncomfortable topics, as these can open minds and prompt growth. I plan to do more talk shows and interviews to raise awareness of emotional suffering, which is often overlooked. I believe it's crucial to acknowledge emotional pain and provide support for those struggling with it. I have many plans for the future, and I hope to create a meaningful impact on the society
