Battery Energy Storage: An Unsustainable Solution for a Zero Carbon Future

Amber Kinetics

Battery energy storage is hailed as the frontrunner in renewable energy solutions, particularly as the demand for climate-friendly solutions increases. Although batteries have become increasingly relied upon in recent years as these solutions are continually developed, the large amounts of toxic waste and environmental and economic damage generated in their creation process make them unsustainable. Many batteries use lithium, which is obtained through evaporating briny water. Typically, this is done on a large scale in areas off the coasts of South America, damaging the local freshwater supply and creating toxic by-products in the process. This means that while battery energy storage looks attractive, it can also have as much of an impact on the environment as traditional energy generation and storage methods.

There are much more environmentally friendly options available than battery energy storage, however. Eco-friendly alternatives include mechanical flywheel (kinetic energy) storage, compressed air energy storage, thermal storage, and pumped hydro energy storage, which involves pumping water uphill. Of these alternatives listed, flywheel energy storage is one of the best solutions, for several reasons. Flywheels contain dual-function motors, meaning that they can generate as well as store energy. The wheels spin to generate kinetic energy which can then be stored in the structure until needed. These wheels are optimized in build to be fast, smooth, and efficient, to allow for as much energy generation and storage as possible. Once the initial setup is complete, they require little to no upkeep maintenance to keep them functioning.

Unlike other renewable energy storage solutions, including battery energy storage, kinetic energy storage solutions such as flywheels are not dependent on weather conditions to generate the energy they store, meaning that there is always an energy supply available that can be easily and quickly regenerated as required. The dual function of flywheels means that they are superior to other renewables, where energy can either be generated or stored but not both and which can often be dependent on specific geographic location or weather conditions for use. Flywheels are dependent solely on the mechanical motion of the wheel to generate the required kinetic energy.

Of the companies working on these technologies, Amber Kinetics is leading the race in flywheel energy storage solutions. Our innovative and carefully thought-out models are designed to be sustainable long-term on both an environmental and economic level. Amber Kinetics stands apart from our competitors for our commitment to using the latest materials and scientific developments to continually improve the design of our flywheels. Our use of carbon and fiberglass not only makes our wheels lighter and more efficient but also helps to lower the initial costs involved in building the wheels. We aim to continue to develop our technologies to further lower the cost of flywheel creation and make them the cost-effective renewable energy storage solution for all. We put the environment and the sustained future of the planet at the heart of everything we do. We believe that with such commitment, development, and time, we can help others see the value in flywheel technology and its superiority over batteries as the energy storage solution of the future.
