31 May,2025 07:02 PM ISTDutch politician Geert Wilders has voiced support for Indian social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, who was recently arrested. On June 1, Wilders posted on social media platform ‘X’ saying, “Free the brave Sharmishta Panoli!” He also shared a poster that read “All eyes on Sharmishta” and urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help her, citing freedom of speech. Sharmishta Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police from Gurugram, Haryana on May 31. She was accused of hurting religious sentiments through one of her social media posts. Although she had deleted the video and issued an unconditional apology on May 15, police said she had not responded to earlier legal notices. She was brought before Kolkata’s Alipore Court, which sent her to 14 days of judicial custody. Her lawyer, Md Samimuddin, said they have applied for her bail. Kolkata Police issued a statement denying claims of an “unlawful arrest” and called some circulating information “factually incorrect and misleading.” They urged people not to spread unverified or speculative content online.... The plan, backed by the U.S., aimed to stop the fighting for 60 days and allow for a hostage-prisoner exchange and more aid to enter Gaza. Hamas said it was ready to release 10 living hostages and return the bodies of 18 people in exchange for over 1,200 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. However, the group also repeated its demands for a complete end to the war and the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, conditions Israel does not accept. 01 June,2025 01:18 PM ISTRescue operation in Sikkim’s Mangan district was badly affected by a landslide on May 31. The landslide damaged several properties and blocked roads, making it hard for rescue teams to reach the area. The rescue mission began after a tragic accident on May 29, when a tourist vehicle carrying 11 people, including the driver, fell nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta River. So far, one body has been found, while ten people are still missing. Teams from the Army, ITBP, NDRF, Sikkim Police, and the Tourism Department are working together on the rescue. Two people with serious injuries were rescued and taken to STNM Hospital in Gangtok. Anand Gurung, a rescue volunteer from the Tourism Department, said, “We were on our way to search for the missing tourists, but the road is blocked for the next 7 to 8 kilometers. Tens of thousands of jubilant fans packed the Champs-Elysees and gathered outside Parc des Princes, where around 50,000 supporters had watched the match live on big screens. Flares and fireworks lit up the night as crowds erupted in celebration. But the festivities soon spiraled out of control. Bus shelters were smashed, cars were set on fire, and clashes broke out between fans and riot police. Authorities said nearly 300 people were arrested during the unrest. Police deployed tear gas and used water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowds, particularly near the Arc de Triomphe, where a group of fans tried to push through police barricades.
