Watch: Duterte takes responsibility for drug war as ICC case begins

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has taken full responsibility for his administration`s "war on drugs" in a video message posted on his Facebook account. In the video, he said he stands by law enforcement and the military, adding that he had promised to protect them and take responsibility for their actions. Duterte made these remarks as he prepares for a legal battle at the International Criminal Court (ICC). He was arrested in Manila on Wednesday for murder charges linked to his anti-drug campaign, which led to thousands of deaths. He was then flown to The Hague and handed over to the ICC. The video, which has been viewed 10 million times, shows Duterte speaking alone in a plain white shirt. It seems to have been recorded inside the plane, as the engine’s hum can be heard in the background. The ICC confirmed that Duterte is now in their custody and will soon appear before a judge in The Hague. He has been taken to a detention facility on the Dutch coast while awaiting trial.... Duterte releases video message for his supporters before landing in Rotterdam

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte released a video message for his supporters on March 12, just before arriving in Rotterdam. Shortly after he landed in the Netherlands, the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed that Duterte was arrested and taken into their custody. The ICC said he was detained by Philippine authorities under an arrest warrant for charges of murder as a crime against humanity. Duterte, who faces accusations related to his controversial war on drugs, was transferred to a detention facility near The Hague, where other high-profile war crimes suspects are held. At 79 years old, Duterte will stay at the ICC Detention Centre, which is part of a larger prison complex. If his trial moves forward, he could become the first former Asian head of state to be tried at the ICC in The Hague.... [Read More]

Duterte's arrest: Families of drug war victims praise Duterte's arrest

On March 12, the remains of more than a dozen victims of extrajudicial killings were buried at a cemetery in Manila. This happened as former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte faces murder charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for killings during his drug war. The burial was part of a program by a non-governmental organization (NGO) to help poor families of victims find a proper resting place for their loved ones who were killed. One of the victims buried was the 44-year-old son of Josephine Comendo, who was killed in 2016. She said that Duterte`s arrest has helped her family begin to heal. Duterte, who was president from 2016 to 2022, was arrested on March 11 in Manila. This is a major development in the ICC`s investigation into the alleged crimes against humanity during his anti-drug campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths and international criticism. At 79, Duterte could become the first former Asian leader to face trial at the ICC in The Hague.... [Read More]
