A day before being Yakub Memon is hanged, guard at Nagpur Jail tells mid-day that the convict told him that he was aware he was going to die and that only a miracle could save him
NAGPUR: "My hanging has been politicised. I know that I am going to die. Only miracle can save me," 1993 Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon told a home guard who was posted near his barrack on Wednesday morning.

The home guard constable told mid-day that Yakub, who was usually a very calm prisoner was looking very disturbed on Wednesday. "He used to never interact with us, but, he asked me several times what had happened in the Supreme Court, which was going to decide his fate," the constable who didn't want to be named told this correspondent.
Yakub had a little upma that was served to him in breakfast and did not have lunch, which consisted of 2 chappatis, dal, rice and brinjal, potatoes and a mix sabji.

"They are politicising my hanging," a disturbed Yakub told the constable posted outside his barrack. The constable stated that Yakub had already sensed his death. He was so sure about it that he told the constable that he could be saved only by a miracle.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities and the local Nagpur police had several rounds of meetings to decide on the security arrangements inside and outside the premises, especially with a number of Naxalites are also lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail and have opposed capital punishment.
A team from Nagpur jail also went to New Delhi to pick up the Supreme Court order and mail it to jail authorities so that they could read and carefully follow it while hanging Yakub.

Though the jail authorities have cleaned a open passage in Badi goal area of jail, they are yet to dig a pit to bury Yakub.
"We can do it in the morning within a hour with the help of ten to fifteen prisoners," said a jail official. "We are waiting for the government to take a stand in this regards. But we are prepared for it," said a jail source.
The jail officials and the PWD have already done most of the preparation for the hanging and on Wednesday were busy with only security arrangements.
Additional Director General Meeran Borwankar reached the jail around 11 am and was in jail till evening. Nagpur Joint Commissioner of Police Rajvardham Sinha also reviewed the security.
Jail sources said Sachin Kurve, the local collector, will be present during the hanging in the morning along with Nagpur Government Medical College (NGMC) Dean, and jail officials.
"Yakub's medical was done twice a day daily and he is fit and can be hanged," said a jail official.
The official added that Yakub will be woken up at 3 am. He will be asked to take a bath and if he is not willing he will be forcefully given a bath. Later, he will be given new white clothes then given some time to pray or read and later he will be served breakfast if he wants and finally hanged.
The hangman who hanged Ajmal Kasab is already present at Nagpur jail and is mostly likely to hang Yakub as well.
Yogesh Desai, the jailor, has been personally monitoring the situation and has called staff of all the other jails including the Yerwada jail where he last served.
Kasab was hanged when Desai was serving in Yerwada Jail as jailor and he has brought all the experienced staff to Nagpur.
