A Mumbra-based family, returning from their native place in Ahmednagar, was allegedly assaulted by locals on the Murbad-Kalyan Road over a minor altercation. One of the family members is said to have suffered a fracture in her ribs and has been admitted in a hospital.

It is all said to have started over the victim’s car being dashed by another in the parking lot of a hotel. After the victim demanded money for the damage, the other driver, promising to pay, allegedly took the family to another location, where a gang of 10 was waiting and assaulted all of them.

Ride gone wrong
Mumbra resident Altaf Babu Shaikh (57) and his wife Zareena (50) were in a Wagon-R, while his brother Rafiq Shaikh (47), a manager in a private transport firm, his wife Nihad (35), and Altaf’s two daughters-in-law Asma Ashfaq Shaikh (32) and Iram Waseem Shaikh (23) along with the kids, including a 45-day-old girl, were in another car.

Rafiq said they were on Murbad road headed towards Kalyan, when they decided to stop for breakfast. “We decided to halt at a hotel on Murbad road. In the eatery’s parking lot, Altaf’s car was hit by another vehicle and we had an argument there, where we asked the person to pay for the damage. He agreed and asked us to follow him,” Rafiq added.

The Shaikh family was taken near Varab village on the Murbad road, where the accused, identified as Devdutta Tiwari, had already called a few people.

“When we reached the spot, our car was surrounded by 10 people. Before I could say anything, they started assaulting me with iron rods, bamboo sticks and stones. When Nihad tried to stop them, they assaulted her as well, and even shot a video,” said Rafiq, adding that Nihad has been admitted in Kalsekar hospital, Mumbra, and is undergoing treatment for her broken ribs.

The complaint circus
The alleged incident happened around 5 pm on Sunday, after which the family reportedly was made to go from one police station to another for registering a complaint. The Mahatma Phule police first filed a case and then transferred it to the Titwala police station.

“The police were not ready to register a complaint. The Mahatma Phule police asked us to go to the Titwala police station, saying it happened in their jurisdiction,” said Altaf’s son Asif, who is in Merchant Navy.

“We are worried about the videos the accused shot of Nihad pleading to them at their feet. They were mocking us… what if the videos go viral?”

Police says
Senior Inspector, Mahatma Phule police station, Anil Pawar said, “We registered a case and transferred it to the Titwala police, who are investigating the matter.”

“We are conducting a probe based on the evidence given by the victim and the number of the accused’s car,” said Senior Inspector, Titwala police station, Venkat Andhale.
