Barely a week left to announce results, Mumbai University (MU) is struggling to evaluate answer sheets. According to varsity sources, over six lakh papers are yet to be evaluated.
Certain that the university will miss the governor’s July 31 deadline to declare the results, various student unions are gearing up for large-scale protests across campuses on August 1.
In a bid to address the evaluation backlog, the varsity has announced four non-instructional days from today, during which all faculty members and professors have to devote at least six hours for evaluation.
Vinayak Dalvi, officer on special duty for MU’s examination section, said, "We are also taking the help of Nagpur University for assessment purposes. Only approved faculty members from that varsity have been tasked with evaluation job. On an average, 55,000 answer sheets are evaluated a day. We intend to increase this to 1 lakh papers a day."
Angry students
Speaking to mid-day, Students Law Council chief Sachin Pawar said, "It’s unlikely that MU would be able to meet the deadline. The vice-chancellor should start typing his resignation letter."
Echoing similar views, Manoj Tekade from Prahar Students’ Organisation said, "If MU is unable to declare results by July 31, we will begin a major agitation from August 1. We will paint the V-C’s car black for plunging the future of numerous students into darkness." Rohit Chandode from ABVP said, "MU has clearly failed to utilise the new online assessment system. We want a probe into its implementation."
Sena meets Guv
Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray met Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao this morning to discuss the delay. Thackeray has demanded that the MU vice-chancellor as well as the education minister put in their papers.
After the meeting, Thackeray tweeted, "Finally are the Education Minister and the Vice Chancellor understanding the needs of the MU and education or must they resign? (sic)"
Meanwhile, the governor has urged MU vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh to update him on the status of evaluation tomorrow.
