Sources in Mantralaya told mid-day that Additional Chief Secretary (Home) KP Bakshi signed the letter and ensured that it was given to Maria, who was abruptly removed from the CP’s post and promoted as Director General (Home Guards) on Tuesday.

Maria’s transfer had evoked negative reactions from several quarters. The government was accused of transferring him under corporate pressure, which experts said was bound to affect the probe in the crucial stages.
On Wednesday, Maria had expressed his inability to supervise the probe as he had not received instructions to do so, although Bakshi had told the media that the officer was empowered in this regard.
Legal issues were also raised saying that since Maria is not part of the Mumbai Police anymore and now holds a non-executive policing post, he would not be able to dispense the duties that the state asked for.
