Bangalore: A 21-year-old Tanzanian student was allegedly stripped, assaulted and paraded naked by a mob in Bengaluru even the local police stood by without taking any action to prevent the tragic incident.

The mob torched the woman's car and her four friends were reportedly thrashed as well.

A report in Deccan Chronicle claimed that the assault happened right under the watch of the local police.

In what is being described as a case of mistaken identity, media reports suggest that the Tanzanian was passing a location in the city's Hesaraghatta area on Sunday night where a 35-year-old woman had died after being mowed down by a car being driven by a Sudanese student just half-hour back.

The locals were angry after the accident and protesting against African students who they accused of driving the car in an inebriated state.

The girl, who is a second year BBA student of Acharya College, is also reported to have tried to board a bus to escape the mob's wrath, but the passengers threw her back.

The incident came to light on Wednesday after the Tanzanian woman sought legal help as police were not registering the case.

She had reportedly gone to the police station to lodge a complaint, but the police are said to have refused to register the case and asked her to bring the Sudanese driver who had mowed down the 35-year-old woman.

The angry mob later also burnt her car and beat up a bystander who had tried to cover the African student with a t-shirt.

Police have now registered a case of rioting based on the complaint filed by one of the students.

"She’s Tanzanian, the man who caused the accident comes from Sudan, they didn’t even know each other," Bosco Kaweesi, Legal Adviser, All African Students Union in Bengaluru was quoted by the Deccan Chronicle as saying.
