The bed-ridden patients at the biggest government-run TB hospital in Asia – Sewri TB Hospital – has been lying in neglect for over a month in the absence of adult diapers. After mid-day highlighted their condition through a report on February 12, wholesale diaper manufacturer – Nobel Hygiene – donated 3,000 diapers to the hospital.
Of the 650 patients that the hospital treats on an average, 100 are completely bed-ridden. They require diapers on a daily basis. The hospital has an annual quota of 75,000 diapers, but due to a delay in floating an estimate of the number of diapers required, the patients are being forced to wear hand-made cloth diapers, which lead to unhygienic conditions. As mid-day had reported, due to the unavailability of diapers, patients were forced to relieve themselves on the beds and the covers would be kept in the soiled condition for days.

Speaking to mid-day, Kartik Johari, vice-president (Marketing and Commerce), Nobel Hygiene, said, "I was really shocked to read about the way the patients were suffering. Being in this profession for over 17 years, I could understand what they were going through. Hence, we decided to donate 3,000 diapers to the hospital, so that they can use them till the required number is procured. This is the first time that we directly donated diapers to a hospital."
According to sources, BMC-run hospitals are responsible for procuring the diapers at their own level. The same process applies for Sewri TB Hospital, but even after repeated complaints from nurses, the hospital did not float the details of the required number. When contacted, Dr Vijay Naringrekar, medical superintendent of Sewri Hospital, informed that they have floated the details and soon the hospital would receive its quota of adult diapers.
