28 November,2024 12:42 PM IST | Ranchi | ANIAam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, allegedly accusing him of making Delhi the "gangster and extortion capital" of India. Speaking to the media in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal criticised the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital, stating that in the past one to two years, there has been a significant increase in gang violence, extortion calls to businessmen and frequent shootings. He further compared the current situation to the underworld dominance in Mumbai in the 1990s. "In the last one to two years, the law and order in Delhi has been deteriorated. We have heard that in the decade of 1990s, the underworld dominated in Mumbai - there used to be open shootouts there... We didn't think that Delhi would face a similar situation. Gangsters have captured Delhi, businessmen are getting ransom calls and firing is common. I have come here (Nangloi) to meet Roshan Lal on whom shots were fired a few days back when he came to open his shop," he said. AAP national convener further accused the BJP of preventing him from meeting the victim, saying, "BJP has sent thousands of its people to stop me. I wasn't allowed to meet him... Who is responsible for all this? (Union HM) Amit Shah has this responsibility of Delhi's law & order and under him, Delhi has become a gangster and extortion capital." "Why is the BJP not allowing me to meet him? What are they trying to hide? I want the law and order in Delhi to improve so that the common man, businessmen and women are safe. The people of Delhi gave me responsibility for education, health and electricity, which I have sorted. The people of Delhi gave the responsibility of law to the centre, which has deteriorated. People are frightened to come out of their homes. People are getting calls for extortion. There is more than one such incident," Arvind Kejriwal added. Responding to the allegations, Special CP (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari stated that the shooting incident in Nangloi, which occurred two months ago, was resolved quickly with the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of weapons. "We have received the information that this incident (Nangloi firing) - which is a two-month-old incident is again being highlighted. We want to clarify that Delhi police took quick action in that and have arrested two accused within a day and have also recovered the weapons. I don't know why it is being highlighted again, even when we took very effective action," he said. Earlier, the Delhi Police's Special Cell on September 30 had arrested two sharpshooters from the Jitender-Gogi gang a day after shots were fired at a sweets shop in Nangloi in a reported extortion bid, said police. The police recovered a semi-automatic pistol with five live cartridges, a country-made pistol with four live cartridges, and a motorcycle used in the crime. According to the police, the two accused are Hari Om alias Lalla, 27, a resident of Rohini Sector 20, and Jatin, 21, from VPO Mundka. In a bid to extort money, the assailants fired gunshots at the counter and employee of a sweets shop in Nangloi and threw extortion slips featuring coloured photographs of deceased gangsters Jitender alias Gogi and Kuldeep Fajja on one side and names of jailed gangsters Deepak alias Boxer, Ankesh Lakra, and Vishal on another side, said police. Police used CCTV footage from the neighbourhood and manual inputs to identify the duo. Further acting on a tip-off, police arrested the duo from Rohini. 28 November,2024 12:29 PM IST | New Delhi | PTIThe Indian Army along with its partner forces flew a total of 140 sorties spanning over 77 hours, transporting 925 passengers and 8,385 kg of cargo from November 17-20, while ensuring that even the remotest and Naxal-affected areas of Maharashtra could participate in the Maharashtra elections 2024, officials said on Wednesday, reported news agency PTI. The Maharashtra elections 2024 were held on November 20, and the results were declared on November 23. "The Indian Army has played a pivotal role in ensuring that even the remotest and Naxal-affected areas of Maharashtra participated in the Assembly elections," a senior army official said, reported PTI. The army, along with other security forces, "mobilised critical resources" to enable voters in these challenging regions to cast their ballots, reported PTI. The army deployed two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs) to augment the much-needed air effort to facilitate movement of election officials and logistics such as Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to areas lacking surface connectivity, "including those affected by Naxalism", reported PTI. This ensured that the election process was successfully carried out even in the most difficult and remote locations, the army said. From November 17-20, the army along with its partner forces "flew a total of 140 sorties spanning over 77 hours, transporting 925 passengers and 8,385 kg of cargo", the force said. Of this, the Indian Army conducted 17 sorties, clocking approximately 22 hours of flight time and carrying 124 passengers. During the de-induction phase from November 20-21, the forces collectively flew 56 sorties over 23 hours, moving 408 passengers and 6,980 kg of cargo. The Indian Army alone conducted nine sorties, totalling 10 hours of flight time, and carrying 73 passengers, it said. "Notably, the army's aviation helicopters facilitated the induction of election officials and EVMs from Wadsa to various hard-to-reach locations, including Sawargaon (165 km), Gyarapatti (70 km), Muramgaon (68 km), and Katezari (50 km) -- areas severely impacted by the Naxalite movement," the official said, reported PTI. The successful execution of these operations highlighted the army's crucial role in supporting democratic processes and ensuring the participation of every citizen in the election process, no matter how remote their location, he added. 28 November,2024 12:22 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentWith imperatives to validate the National M-SAR construct through an ‘all-inclusive’ and ‘collaborative’ approach, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercises & Workshop (SAREX-24) will be held under the aegis of the NMSAR Board in Kochi from November 27 to 30, 2024. Considering the vast expanse of India’s 4.6 million sq. km Search and Rescue Region (ISRR), the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has consistently advocated for cooperative engagements not only with domestic resource agencies but also with friendly foreign nations. The 11th edition of SAREX-24 will focus on Mass Rescue Operations (MRO), designed to respond to large-scale contingencies at sea. The theme of the exercise, "Enhancing Search and Rescue Capabilities through Regional Collaboration," underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) steadfast commitment to assisting with large-scale emergencies, irrespective of location, nationality, or circumstances, within the Indian Search and Rescue Region (ISRR) and beyond. The two-day event will be inaugurated by Rajesh Kumar Singh, IAS, Defence Secretary, in the presence of Director General S. Paramesh, PTM, TM, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard and National Maritime Search and Rescue Coordinating Authority. Day One of the event, scheduled for November 28, 2024, will feature a variety of programs, including tabletop exercises, workshops, and seminars. These sessions will involve the participation of senior officials from government agencies, ministries, armed forces, key stakeholders, and foreign delegates. On Day Two, a sea exercise will be conducted off the Kochi coast, simulating two large-scale contingencies. The exercise will include the participation of ships and aircraft from the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, and Indian Air Force, as well as a passenger vessel and tug from the Cochin Port Authority and boats from Customs. The response matrix during the sea exercise will showcase various evacuation methodologies, incorporating cutting-edge technology such as satellite-aided distress beacons, drones deploying life buoys, air-droppable life rafts, and remote-controlled life-saving equipment. These demonstrations aim to highlight the advancements in search-and-rescue operations and enhance preparedness for maritime emergencies. The exercise is designed not only to evaluate the efficiency of operations and coordination with national stakeholders but also to emphasise cooperative engagements with littoral states and Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs). Over the years, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has emerged as a premier maritime agency, effectively steering the Government of India's efforts toward establishing a stable and efficient Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR) framework. The ICG's responsibilities have expanded further with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member states to coordinate SAR operations in the Indian Ocean Region, where it has been designated as the implementing agency under the MoU's provisions. Additionally, the ICG has been nominated as the nodal agency for SAR activities in the Indo-Pacific Region.

Meanwhile, the city's minimum temperature settled 0.2 notches below normal at 10.2 degrees Celsius, the Indian Meteorological Department said. The IMD has forecast mainly clear sky during the day while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 26 degrees Celsius. Amidst the rising pollution levels in Delhi, the government has instructed the administration to use truck-mount water sprinklers to mitigate the effects of air pollution. Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the Delhi government and Police to immediately set up checkpoints on all 113 entry points to Delhi to check the entry of trucks in the national capital. It appointed 13 members of the Bar as court commissioners to visit the entry points to Delhi and verify whether entry of trucks is being stopped. The apex court also expressed dissatisfaction with the compliance of GRAP IV measures saying despite orders passed by the apex court and CAQM, there is a failure on the part of the Delhi government and Police to comply with clauses under GRAP stage IV. As per the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-IV restrictions imposed by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the entry of trucks is prohibited in Delhi and public construction projects have been halted until further notice. Stage IV of the GRAP was activated in the national capital keeping in view the rising level of pollution. (With inputs from Agencies)
