Tragic! Fearing reprimand over date, teenage girls jump into the river

Pune: Scared that their parents had learnt about their relationship with their boyfriends, two teenaged girls allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Mula-Mutha river in Pune. The bodies were fished out from the river on Wednesday morning.

Police have identified the girls as Sneha Sadanand More (15) and Simran (Chotikumari) Ajitkumar Singh (15), both residents of Wadgaon Sheri. Sneha’s step-father, who is a tailor, had approached Chandannagar police station about the girls having gone missing from their homes early on Sunday. Singh’s father who accompanied him, is a retired hawaldar from the army.

The girls were football players and students of Std X at Vidyankur school. Police said on Saturday when the school had a holiday, the duo claimed they had football practice, and had left their homes around 8.30 am.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Kalpana Barawakar said, “They left their houses on Saturday morning wearing their school uniforms. They went behind their school, changed their clothes and had lunch at their friend Aishwarya Gadre’s house. Later the duo met the two boys whom they knew since three months via Facebook.”

Police said both the girls’ parents were strict and had restrictions at home. Anil Patrudkar, inspector in-charge of Chandannagar police station said, “Sneha had taken her father’s mobile and called him claiming they were still playing and then switched it off. But Chotikumari’s younger sister Monika called her on her mobile, and alerted her that their father had come to know that they had lied, and was waiting for her to come home. It seems that one of Chotikumari’s other sisters had an affair with a boy, and Chotikumari had seen her father thrashing her. A police case had also been lodged then. Perhaps worried and scared about how their parents will react, they took the extreme step.”

Barawakar said, “Based on the parents’ missing complaint we were probing the case, and on Wednesday local residents noticed two bodies floating in the river. One hand each of both girls was tied to the other with a scarf.”

Patrudkar said the boys who the girls had a relationship with, study in Std XI. He added, “We have summoned the two boys. On Saturday they were all roaming on bikes near Bund garden and having fun. But the moment the girls came to know that they were caught by their parents, they jumped in the flowing river near Preamble society.”

The duo’s parents are shocked. After the post mortem at Sassoon General hospital late evening, the bodies were handed over to them.
