On Sunday evening, some citizens had noticed a big maroon suitcase abandoned near the Kharadi octroi post on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and they had alerted the police control room. When the bag was opened, the Yerawada police found the body of a girl, around 20 years of age, who was strangled by unknown people.

The girl was wearing black jeans and a top, and a pair of white earphones was found on her. Apart from the strangulation marks on her throat, no other injury marks were visible on the girl’s body, said police.

A murder case was registered against unknown suspects. Inspector (Crime) Shivaji Shinde from Yerawada Police Station, who is investigating the case, said, “So far, we haven’t got any clues to identify the girl. We suspect that she was murdered on Saturday by throttling her neck and her body was then stuffed in the bag. The murderers may have arrived in a four-wheeler and then, due to fear of police checking at the city limits, dumped the suitcase near Kharadi octroi post.”

“Prima facie it looks like a murder resulting from a failed relationship. There are no unusual injury marks on the girl’s body. We are checking missing persons’ complaints across all police stations.

We have also informed all IT parks, malls and colleges and given them the girl’s details. Our teams are investigating in Mumbai, Thane, Ahmednagar and Pune districts,” he added.
