Eyewitness account
Vinayak hit two men, Hari Yadav and Adil Mukadam when they were crossing a road at Sector number 18, Belapur. “A speeding Honda City dashed into Yadav and later hit Mukadam,” said Santosh Chandran, an eyewitness. On Sunday, Mukadam (25) met Chandran at his garage as he worked there previously. Mukadam had shifted to Dubai to work for an automobile firm but was in India on a three-month leave.
Chandran took the duo to a private hospital nearby, where Yadav was discharged, but Mukadam was declared dead upon arrival. “I could not note down the car number, but I spotted the NMMC logo and that Dy Mayor was written on the car,” said Chandran, who filed a complaint at the Belapur police station late at night.
Police says
A case was registered under Sections 279, 337, 338, 304 (A) of the IPC and Sections 134 (b) and 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The Belapur police officers contacted deputy mayor Avinash Lad, but learnt that the car was not his.
“Yesterday, the deputy mayor’s driver allegedly said that he was not driving on Sunday, but had heard that Sutar’s car was at the Honda showroom for repair,” said CM Godse, assistant police inspector investigating the case, adding that the car was seized and Vinayak was arrested from his Nerul residence. The police is also probing whether Vinayak was drunk and has sent him for medical examination. “He claims that he could not see the man as it was raining heavily. He fled with the car after hearing a loud thud,” added Godse.
Corporator speaks
“It was my car, but I was not inside. I am aware that my driver left on Saturday after parking the car at Belapur Bhavan. On Sunday, he was driving to his place when the mishap occurred,” Jayant Sutar told mid-day.
