It seems these snakes understood that they were nothing less than God, even if it was for just 24 hours, and decided to make random appearances on the occasion of Nag Panchami - a day dedicated to worshipping snakes and serpents. In an unusual case, three of the reptiles were rescued from different residential areas of Mulund, while people across the city were busy celebrating the auspicious day.

Members of Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), an NGO that works with the forest department in the area of man-animal conflict, carried out all the three rescue operations. "The first snake was rescued from a swimming pool inside a residential society in Mulund East," said Pawan Sharma, president of RAWW and honorary wildlife warden for Thane district. "It was a checkered keelback water snake. The society watchman immediately alerted us after he spotted it," he added.

The second one, which was a buff striped keelback, was rescued from a convenience store. The third one, a rat snake, was found at a construction site in Mulund. All the snakes were non-venomous.

Sharma further said, "All the three species are registered with the forest department. Following a physical examination, they will be released in their natural habitats."
