An infant and a nine-year-old girl died after a pipeline burst in Bandra East's Indira Nagar slum this morning.

The incident took place when a 1,450 mm diameter pipeline suddenly burst. Encroachers, who had built shanties in the vicinity of the pipeline, were swept away due to the force of the gushing water, said civic officials. According to Bhabha hospital doctors, an eight-month-old baby was brought dead. A nine-year-old girl, identified as Priyanka, was rushed to VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz East, but was declared dead on arrival.

When contacted, Mahesh Narvekar, chief officer of the disaster management unit said, "There were two deaths reported after the incident." At the time of going to press, the hydraulic engineering department was surveying the place and search operations were on as locals claimed that some people were missing.
