After clubbing Sonali Chavan to death with a hammer, diamond merchant Kiran Makwana stabs her 14-year-old son; slashes his forearm and informs cops
A 39-year-old diamond merchant murdered his 32-year-old live-in partner and her 14-year-old son Kunal in the wee hours of Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Kiran Makwana, who attempted suicide by slashing his forearm after informing the Tulinj police, Nalasopara, about the double murder.

An officer from Tulinj police station said Makwana, a diamond merchant, was in a relationship with Sonali Chavan for the past few years. Six months ago, he and his two children had shifted into her rented apartment at Sai Seva Society in Evershine Nagar, where she lived with Kunal.

Sonali’s second husband Rajkumar also lives in the same house. The officer added that Kunal was her son from her first marriage. After divorcing her first husband in 2013, she married Rajkumar Chavan. He claimed that though Rajkumar was aware of her affair with Makwana, he never objected to it. Rajkumar is a radiologist.
Pre-planned murder?
Another police officer said, “Makwana suspected Sonali of giving step-motherly treatment to his children. On Sunday night, they argued over the same issue, following which Makwana left the house with his children.
He spent the next two nights at his relative’s place. He returned to Sonali’s residence in the wee hours of Tuesday and clubbed her head with a hammer while she was asleep. He then stabbed her multiple times.

When her son rushed to his mother’s aid after hearing her scream, Makwana stabbed him repeatedly. Sonali and her son died on the spot. Rajkumar was at work at the time of the incident.”
After killing the mother-son duo, Makwana called the Tulinj police station and confessed to the murders. But before the police could reach Sonali’s residence, he attempted suicide by slashing his forearm. The cops reached the crime scene and rushed all three of them to the nearest civic hospital. While Sonali and her son were declared dead on arrival, Makwana was shifted to the JJ Hospital following basic medical aid.
Additional SP (Palghar) Shrikrishna Kokate said Makwana has been booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) and will be arrested once he is discharged from hospital.
