The Malwani police arrested a 28-year-old carpenter for allegedly raping a 21-year-old and then setting her ablaze. The accused had been on the run since the incident took place on Thursday.

The victim had sustained burn injuries and passed away at Shatabdi Hospital very next day. Cops suspected that the girl had been raped before she was set on fire by the accused, whose identity was ascertained later. The accused denied both charges and said they had had consensual sex.

The mid-day report on December 19 ’21-year-old set on fire, cops supect rape’, had mentioned that while searching the victim’s house, the police found a used condom lying in the dustbin.
Because of the same, they had suspected that the girl had been raped before she was set on fire.
Upon further investigation, the cops suspected the involvement of Ajmal Salim Siddiqui (28) — a local resident who a works as a carpenter in Malwani. The police detained him on Saturday, after locals informed the police that they had seen him roaming about in the area several times.
According to officials investigating the matter, while searching through the girl’s house, they had found a newspaper cutting. On the newspaper cutting was a mobile number that they traced to Siddiqui. After his arrest, he was produced in court and remanded to police custody till December 28.
