A father-son duo was arrested for cheating a 29-year-old man of Rs 8,000 on the pretext of repairing his car and also stealing his mobile phone at SV Road in Malad (West) on Sunday. Malad police have charged the two men with cheating and theft.

The accused were identified as Arif Gaus Mohammed Shaikh,48, and Faisal Arif Gaus Mohammed Shaikh, 23.

On Sunday, Faisal stopped a 29-year-old man on SV Road saying that spark is emitting from his car. Later, on pretext of repairing, Faisal called Arif saying that he is a mechanic. Arif took Rs 8,000 in cash from the man for repairs and the two ran away before taking the victim’s mobile phone from the car.

The victim then approached Malad police and filed a complaint.

Police began investigating and with help of CCTV footage of the area they identified the accused.
Both Arif and Faisal are repeat offenders and have been previously arrested in similar crimes by Daighar, Powai, Bangur Nagar, Kurar and Malvani police.
Police caught the duo near Ridhi Sindhi Hospital in Malad (West) where they were preparing to cheat another person.

“Their modus operandi was that sometimes son Faisal or father Arif used to stop a car saying that sparks are emitting from the engine. When the driver opened the bonnet to inspect, another accused used to come posing as a mechanic, saying that a certain part needs replacement. They demanded money and used to run away after getting the cash. At SV Road they took Rs 8,000 from a 29-year-old man and also stole his mobile phone that was kept in the car,” said a police officer from Malad police station.
The accused confessed to the crime during interrogation.
“We have arrested them under relevant sections of the of IPC. They were produced before the court and were remanded in police custody. Arif has three previous similar cases against him while son Faisal has five cases,” said senior inspector George Fernandez from Malad police station.
