He allegedly grabbed her hand and forced her inside his shanty, where he raped her after threatening her with a knife. An eyewitness, a minor boy who also lives in the same neighbourhood, said he saw the girl come out of the shanty in tears, and looking afraid. He added that the accused kept watching her until she had exited the lane.

When the girl reached her residence, injured and bleeding, she narrated the incident to her aunt. Both of them went to Kanojiya’s house, but he was not present there at the time. The survivor’s mother and aunt then lodged an FIR at the DN Nagar police station.

A second ordeal
Later in the day, the survivor and her family went through yet another ordeal when they visited the Government Hospital for a medical examination. Her father, who accompanied her for the examination, alleged that the police were discouraging him from lodging an FIR.

The medical examination confirmed the rape, and a case was registered against Kanojiya under Section 376 of IPC, as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Kanojiya was arrested by the police, and on searching his room, forensic experts found further crucial evidence pertaining to the case.
